"In 1945, feeling old at fifty, the Scottish composer Cecil Gray sat down at his desk in London's Albany to recapture the days of his youth. The result is this ebullient, opinionated, entirely delightful memoir: of childhood holidays and eccentric uncles; of First World War spy scares with D.H. Lawrence in Cornwall and the bohemian splendour of the day - from Café Royal in the twenties to the Fitzrovia bars of the forties, where he caroused with the likes of Augustus John, Constant Lambert and Dylan Thomas, of visits to Italy with Epstein, to Finland with Sibelius, the south of France with the aging Delius..."--Back cover.

How and why did the life and music of Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) matter to experimental writers in the early twentieth century? Previous answers to this question have tended to focus on structural analogies between musical works and literary texts, charting the many different ways in which poetry and prose resemble Beethoven's compositions. This book takes a different approach. It focuses on how early twentieth-century writers—chief among them E. M. Forster, Aldous Huxley, Wyndham Lewis, Dorothy Richardson, Rebecca West, and Virginia Woolf—profited from the representational conventions associated in the nineteenth century and beyond with Beethovenian culture. The emphasis of Moonlighting falls for the most part on how modernist writers made use of Beethovenian legend. It is concerned neither with formal similarities between Beethoven's music and modernist writing nor with the music of Beethoven per se, but with certain ways of understanding Beethoven's music which had long before 1900 taken shape as habit, myth, cliché, and fantasy, and with the influence they had on experimental writing up to 1930. Moonlighting suggests that the modernists drew knowingly and creatively on the conventional. It proposes that many of the most experimental works of modernist literature were shaped by a knowing reliance on Beethovenian consensus; in short, that the literary modernists knew Beethovenian legend when they saw it, and that they were eager to use it.

D H Lawrence Music And Modernism written by Susan Reid and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-06 with Literary Criticism categories.

This first book-length study of D. H. Lawrence’s lifelong engagement with music surveys his extensive musical interests and how these permeate his writing, while also situating Lawrence within a growing body of work on music and modernism. A twin focus considers the music that shaped Lawrence’s novels and poetry, as well as contemporary developments in music that parallel his quest for new forms of expression. Comparisons are made with the music of Debussy, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Wagner, and British composers, including Bax, Holst and Vaughan Williams, and with the musical writings of Forster, Hardy, Hueffer (Ford), Nietzsche and Pound. Above all, by exploring Lawrence and music in historical context, this study aims to open up new areas for study and a place for Lawrence within the field of music and modernism.

This book will change the way you think about D. H. Lawrence. Critics have tried to define him as a Georgian poet, an imagist, a vitalist, a follower of the French symbolists, a romantic or a transcendentalist, but none of the usual labels fit. The same theme runs through all his work, beginning with his very first novel, The White Peacock, and ending with the last line of his final book, Apocalypse. Always it is nature. He said this over and over again, and no one - especially those who feared the "old ways" of harmonious and balanced living on the earth - understood him.

A Russian Jew of Bloomsbury looks at the remarkable influence that an outsider had on the tightly knit circle of Britain's cultural elite. Among Koteliansky's friends were Katherine Mansfield, Leonard and Virginia Woolf, Mark Gertler, Lady Ottoline Morrell, H.G. Wells, and Dilys Powell. But it was his close and turbulent friendship with D.H. Lawrence that proved to be Koteliansky's lasting legacy. In a lively and vibrant narrative, Galya Diment shows how, despite Kot's determination, he could never escape the dark aspects of his past or overcome the streak of anti-Semitism that ran through British society, including the hearts and minds of many of his famous literary friends.

Wilfred Owen written by Guy Cuthbertson and has been published by Yale University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-03-25 with Biography & Autobiography categories.

One of Britain’s best-known and most loved poets, Wilfred Owen (1893–1918) was killed at age 25 on one of the last days of the First World War, having acted heroically as soldier and officer despite his famous misgivings about the war's rationale and conduct. He left behind a body of poetry that sensitively captured the pity, rage, valor, and futility of the conflict. In this new biography Guy Cuthbertson provides a fresh account of Owen's life and formative influences: the lower-middle-class childhood that he tried to escape; the places he lived in, from Birkenhead to Bordeaux; his class anxieties and his religious doubts; his sexuality and friendships; his close relationship with his mother and his childlike personality. Cuthbertson chronicles a great poet's growth to poetic maturity, illuminates the social strata of the extraordinary Edwardian era, and adds rich context to how Owen's enduring verse can be understood.

In the final installment of a quadrilogy, Steven Propp once again invites others to spend a few moments with his family to not only appreciate the difficulties of being young, but also realize the crucial importance of family values, learning together, and loving each other unconditionally—especially in today’s ever-changing times. It’s been five years and the Propps’ six grandchildren are still going to school, playing sports and cheerleading, taking nature walks, playing card games, eagerly awaiting the release of blockbuster movies, and asking for help with homework. Now as they move onto middle and high school and even college, there are also new experiences that include learning how to drive, visiting a farmer’s market, listening to classical music, and even dealing with mice in the house! The questions they pose to their grandparents are becoming more complex, even controversial, as they ask about Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam War, IQ tests, illegal drugs, the dangers of smoking and vaping, protests by prominent athletes, and the issues of race, ethnicity, genetics, and multiculturalism. Concluding Family Lessons completes the insightful journey into the lives of six grandchildren and their grandparents as they face challenging issues together.
