Was ist Musik? Und was verbinden die Menschen mit ihr? Die Musik ist ein Medium mit einem breiten Spektrum an Möglichkeiten. Sie ist eines der wenigen Dinge auf der Welt, das die Menschen über alle Sprach- und Bildungsbarrieren hinweg faszinieren kann und verbindet. Aber warum wirkt die Musik so magisch auf uns? Die Musik kennt keine Grenzen und gehört zu unseren Grundbedürfnissen. Sie begleitet uns in vielen Lebenslagen und hilft uns, bestimmte Emotionen auszulösen oder zu erzeugen. Schon Platon stellte fest, dass die Musik eine bedeutende Funktion hat. Sie übt eine Macht auf jeden Einzelnen aus und nimmt uns mit in einen Bann, der uns nicht mehr loslässt. Dabei spielt die soziale Zugehörigkeit, das Alter, das Geschlecht und die Kultur keine Rolle. Sokrates behauptet sogar, dass die Musik eine Zauberqualität hat, die auf die Gemüter der jungen Leute wirkt. Die Musik kann Menschen aus unterschiedlichen Kontexten zusammenbringen und einen großen Beitrag zur Entwicklung der Persönlichkeit, des Selbstwertgefühls und des Selbstbewusstseins leisten. Aus diesem Grund stellt die Musik ein wichtiges Medium dar, auf welches die Soziale Arbeit zurückgreifen kann. Besonders die offene Jugendhilfe nutzt die Macht der Musik für sich in verschiedenen Projekten.

Von daher zählt für den Menschen eher das Erleben der Musik als zu versuchen das Gehörte zu entschlüsseln. Dieses Erleben, nicht nur in der Freizeitbeschäftigung, ist ein Genuss und stiftet Identität. Somit ist die Musik ein prägendes Element in der Jugendzeit. Jugendliche finden sich in einer hoch entwickelten Medienlandschaft wieder, die in der Adoleszenz erst richtig entdeckt und erfahren werden muss.
