Musik hatte innerhalb der NS-Diktatur einen sehr hohen Stellenwert. Die Frage, warum gerade Musik so wichtig für die Umsetzung nationalsozialistischer Ideologien war, lässt sich beantworten, wenn man das Wesen der Musik genauer betrachtet: In fast allen Formen menschlicher Gesellschaft ist sie ein integraler Faktor, d.h. indem Singen ein körperliches Wohlgefühl darstellt, kann sie sowohl auf die Psyche, also die Innenwelt eines Menschen, als auch auf die Außenwelt, z.B. das Geschehen innerhalb der Gesellschaft, wirken. Musik kann so identitätsfördernd und -stiftend sein und stellt somit in seiner alltäglichen Verwendung ein geeignetes Mittel zur Verbreitung von Ideologien dar. Diese Funktionalität nützten und missbrauchten die Nationalsozialisten, um die von ihnen formulierten Ziele eines NS-Staates zu verwirklichen. Nun stellt sich die Frage: Wie konnte die in der heutigen Zeit meist nur aus Gründen der Unterhaltung konsumierte Musik auf politische Ziele umgedeutet und als sog. Machtinstrument verwendet werden und dabei auch die ihr eigene Vielfältigkeit verlieren?

Is music removed from politics? To what ends, beneficent or malevolent, can music and musicians be put? In short, when human rights are grossly abused and politics turned to fascist demagoguery, can art and artists be innocent? These questions and their implications are explored in Michael Kater's broad survey of musicians and the music they composed and performed during the Third Reich. Great and small--from Valentin Grimm, a struggling clarinetist, to Richard Strauss, renowned composer--are examined by Kater, sometimes in intimate detail, and the lives and decisions of Nazi Germany's professional musicians are laid out before the reader. Kater tackles the issue of whether the Nazi regime, because it held music in crassly utilitarian regard, acted on musicians in such a way as to consolidate or atomize the profession. Kater's examination of the value of music for the regime and the degree to which the regime attained a positive propaganda and palliative effect through the manner in which it manipulated its musicians, and by extension, German music, is of importance for understanding culture in totalitarian systems. This work, with its emphasis on the social and political nature of music and the political attitude of musicians during the Nazi regime, will be the first of its kind. It will be of interest to scholars and general readers eager to understand Nazi Germany, to music lovers, and to anyone interested in the interchange of music and politics, culture and ideology.

Sie behandelt die vier Phasen von der Hitler’schen Machtübernahme bis zum arisierten Deutschland und wie in dieser Zeit mit penibler Genauigkeit und Ordnung der Musikapparat verändert wurde und dieser somit auch gewissermaßen Vorreiter für kulturelle Institutionen in struktureller Hinsicht wurde. Nachfolgend wird die Bedeutung, die der Musik generell in jenem Zeitraum zugemessen wurde, behandelt, welche Arten von Musik erwünscht oder erlaubt waren und auch wie sich an Musik - besonders hinsichtlich propagandistischen Missbrauchs - vergangen wurde und welche Rolle in diesem Zusammenhang der Rundfunk spielte. Große Bedeutung wird ebenso der nicht erwünschten Musik, der sogenannten „Entarteten Musik“, zugemessen. Hierzu wird die Stellung der größten „Problemherde“ in den Augen der Nazis, Jazz und die neu geschaffene Operette, thematisiert und auch in welchem Zusammenhang Juden mit Musik im deutschen Reich standen. Zudem wird auf den Widerstand eingegangen, der der Ausrottung der musikalischen Vielfältigkeit entgegentrat. Ebenso enthalten sind auch zwei kurze Analysen, die die Unterschiede zwischen arteigener und artfremder Musik darstellen sollen.
