Excerpt from Musikalisches Wochenblatt, 1893, Vol. 24: Organ fur Musiker und Musikfreunde Wir wurden sofort und freundlich empfangen, und selbst von meiner, geringen Wenigkeit, die kaum erst einige wenige litterarische Versuche in diesem Blatte geradebrecht hatte, wollte der vortreii'licbe Meister schon Kenntniss gehabt haben. Ich hatte Robert Franz schon fruher, gelegentlich des Hallenser handel-jubilaums im Februar 1885 wenn auch damals nur aus ehrfurchts voller, scheuer Ferne fluchtig gesehen. Fe war in der dortigen Stadtkirche bei der Hauptprobe zum "messias gewesen, wozu er sich eingefunden hatte, wie als wollte er auch mit den Anderen den bohren Klangen seiner eigenen Bearbeitung lauschen, da erblickte ich an einem Pfeiler zum ersten Mal das ausdrucksvolle Haupt mit dem glattgescheitelten, eigenthumlich blond-grauen Haar, dem schmerzlichen Zucken um den Mundwinkel und dem unvergesslich milden, klaren blauen Auge. Einige Stunden spater begegnete ich ihm dann wieder in den festlich geschmuckten Strassen der Stadt, und man konnte ihm das helle Aufleuchten der Freude dabei ordentlich anmerken, ' seinen Handel einmal also gefeiert zu sehen. Endlich, zum dritten Male bei jenem Feste, sah ich ihn anlasslich der Feier selbst vor dem Stand bilde Handel's auf dem Marktplatze in offieieller Kleidung, mit Cylinder und schwarzem Recke; irgend eine Episode dabei schien ihn besonders zu beschaftigen, und ich horte (da ich ganz in seiner Nahe Pesto gefasst hatte), wie er in der tauben Menschen eigenthumlichen, rauhen Weise unausgesetzt auf seinen Nachbar einsprach. Auch im Sommer darauf hatte ich ihn von der Strasse aus in seinem Arbeitszimmer, vertieft beim Lampenschein in seine Studien, langere Zeit einmal beobachten kennen. Wir kamen eben aus einer Auffuhrung des handepschen "herakles im gegenuberliegenden Schutzenhause, und ich konnte nicht umhin, allerlei stille, trube Betrach tungen daruber anzustellen, wie er doch so abgeschlossen von all diesem musikalischen Treiben in seiner unmittel barsten Nachbarschaft sein Lebensalter vereinsamt dahin bringen musse.
