I feel that it is extremely important that children can identify with their culture and I wanted to promote that in this very book. In this children's book I incorporated stereotypes, stigmas, and history of the African American so that the reader can see the beauty from all of it. We have to learn to embrace the stereotypes and stigmas that divide us as people so it can unite us together. I also wanted the young reader to understand that Africa is a positive not a negative. History doesn't begin at slavery nor does it end there. With incorporating these things in the form a children's book I feel that it will reach the reader on a different conscious level.

My black is beautiful, NOT, judging on how much work some people go through to be everything but black. But why would anyone want to be something other than what they are? We have learned in American history that people were killed because the color of their skin, lynched with no consequences to the murders for the color of their skin, discriminated against because the color of their skin, non-educated and less educated. One of the greatest gifts in the world may just be the sense of site. unfortunately, some are born without it and some eventually lose their site in due time from this reason to that reason. I've often sat by myself wondering, how life would be if site was not a gift majority of society is blessed with. From what I know, people have been treated differently, treated unfairly, treated inhumane just from the color of their skin for so long, some people have come to accept that's just life. I am not one of those people who have accepted that's just life. My whole entire life I have embraced the skin tone that I was born with. Black is beautiful to me. With that said, that does not mean what I'm told, what I hear, what I read, what I watch, what I've experience as a black person has always been beautiful. It saddens me sometimes to see how we as black people is portrayed in some instances. I guess it doesn't benefit anyone when there are black people who are ok how they are portrayed when portrayed negatively. I remember watching an old-school cartoon when I was younger thinking why is Betty Boop so popular. But she has and she is still for a very long time now. As I got older, in my thirties, I just so happen to come across a betty boop cartoon on a DVD of multi cartoons I bought for my kids to watch. On this Betty Boop cartoon was a black cartoon person with big lips, black skin, nappy hair and big eyes. I was immediately offended that the creator of this cartoon was able to make what some consider an attractive white cartoon girl, but showed the black person looking so homely. The thought of the cartoon while I put these thoughts on paper offends me. That's what society been putting out there for years without thinking that image and many other images of how black people are portrayed would have an effect on me and possibly others. if we all were blind and couldn't see no color on anyone, no one would be judged or treated a certain way just because of their color. Color isn't the only reason people are treated differently, but it is one that stands out with me because I've personally had to endure example after example of being treated negatively just because of the color of my skin. Let me be clear when I say, that's not a good feeling and that feeling has the possibility to grow into something with much more negative energy than that which created that feeling in the first place. My black is beautiful, not was my way of sharing my perspective on what's goes through my mind at times. Current events sometimes trigger these thoughts and often it's something from my past comes to mind and during reflecting, I make a conscience effort to write these thoughts down. I like to believe that I'm not the only person that share my skin color, shares my sentiments as well. Maybe this was way to share with those that don't look like me, how those that do look like me feel, or have feel during this incident or another
