"I have sat on a little oil drum, rusty and in the midst of garbage, and some black brothers and I have grounded together." - Walter Rodney In his short life, the Guyanese intellectual Walter Rodney emerged as one of the leading thinkers and activists of the anticolonial revolution, leading movements in North America, South America, the African continent, and the Caribbean. In each locale, Rodney found himself a lightning rod for working class Black Power. His deportation catalyzed 20th century Jamaica's most significant rebellion, the 1968 Rodney riots, and his scholarship trained a generation how to think politics at an international scale. In 1980, shortly after founding of the Working People's Alliance in Guyana, the 38-year-old Rodney would be assassinated. In this classic work published in the heady days of international black power, Groundings with My Brothers details the global circulation of emancipatory ideas, but also offers first-hand reports of Rodney's mass movement organizing. Introduced and contextualized by leading Caribbean scholar-activists, this updated edition brings Rodney's legacy to a new generation of radicals.

Muslim Arab Sudanese in Cairo have played a fundamental role in Egyptian history and society during many centuries of close relations between Egypt and Sudan. Although the government and official press describes them as "brothers" in a united Nile Valley, recent political developments in Egypt have underscored the precarious legal status of Sudanese in Cairo. Neither citizens nor foreigners, they are in an uncertain position, created in part through an unusual ethnic discourse which does not draw principally on obvious characteristics of difference. This rich ethnographic study shows instead that Sudanese ethnic identity is created from deeply held social values, especially those concerning gender and propriety, shared by Sudanese and Egyptian communities. The resulting ethnic identity is ambiguous and flexible, allowing Sudanese to voice their frustrations and make claims for their own uniqueness while acknowledging the identity that they share with the dominant Egyptian community.

'Jennifer Eberhardt makes it clear that racism operates at all levels, and it fills me with hope to know that she is fighting it at all levels. More power to you, sister. The world needs you.' BENJAMIN ZEPHANIAH 'Poignant... striking... important and illuminating.' NEW YORK TIMES ______________________ No matter how fair-minded we think we are, we still don't treat people equally. Why not? Every day, unconscious biases affect our visual perception, attention, memory and behaviour in ways that are subtle and very difficult to recognise without in-depth scientific studies. In a single interaction, they might slip by unnoticed. Over thousands of interactions, they become a huge and powerful force. Jennifer Eberhardt is a pioneering social psychologist one of the world's leading experts on unconscious bias. In this landmark book, she lays out how these biases affect every sector of society, leading to enormous disparities from the classroom to the courtroom to the boardroom. But unconscious bias is not a sin to be condemned. It's a universal human condition, and as Eberhardt shows, one that can - and must - be overcome. ______________________ 'A critically important book.' DAVID OLUSOGA, author of Black and British 'Groundbreaking... essential reading for anyone interested in how we become a more just society.' BRYAN STEVENSON, author of Just Mercy 'This book should be required reading for everyone.' ROBIN DIANGELO, author of White Fragility 'Jennifer Eberhardt's ground-breaking work has the power to shift the debate and help shape a fairer society.' DAVID LAMMY MP 'Jennifer Eberhardt gives us the opportunity to talk about race in new ways, ultimately transforming our thinking about ourselves and the world we want to create.' MICHELLE ALEXANDER, author of The New Jim Crow 'An illuminating and readable account of how racial stereotypes and assumptions can cause social devastation and keep huge inequalities in place.' DR PRIYAMVADA GOPAL, University of Cambridge 'Read this book. Biased will enlighten your journey through race relations and associations.' DAWN BUTLER MP

Fatal Pauses written by Stuart C. Yudofsky and has been published by American Psychiatric Pub this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-01 with Medical categories.

People can become stuck in many ways and for a wide variety of reasons, explains the author of Fatal Pauses, that rare book that both clinicians and general readers can benefit from and enjoy. Novelistic in its depictions of composite patients but clear-eyed in its analysis, the book offers a "3-D method" of addressing "stuck"-ness, which is defined as "not stopping something that is bad for us" or "not starting and staying with something that is good for us." The process of discovering why one is stuck, deciding to become unstuck, and then asserting the discipline required to do so is brought to vivid life by one of the most respected psychiatrists of our day. The book's structure is logical and engaging: The Am I Stuck? Scale can be self-administered by general readers or administered by clinicians to their patients. This first chapter sets the stage for what follows. The 3-D method of getting unstuck is presented in a systematic, easy-to-comprehend manner that begins with a brief overview and proceeds to more detailed instructions and insights. Riveting case examples make up the heart of the book. They are not mere summaries but consist of thorough and detailed clinical descriptions that provide context, in addition to extensive dialogue and analysis. Several of these cases are divided into multiple chapters, providing a comprehensive clinical picture to help both mental health professionals and lay readers increase their understanding of being "stuck." A range of categories or "stuck"-ness is addressed, including being trapped by career choices, limited by obesity, paralyzed by an unsatisfying marriage, incapacitated by addiction, and imprisoned by the need to please. Of special note is the case example of a young man whose interpersonal relationships have gradually, but progressively, become reduced to computer-based encounters. The author's examination of this individual's fixation on video games and virtual realities and his escape from this cyberprison through treatment is both timely and compelling. Finally, the author provides an evolutionary and neurobiological overview of how we become "stuck," which helps the reader grasp the underpinnings of this behavior and learn how to become "unstuck." Written in a warm and disarming style, Fatal Pauses will find a home in clinicians' libraries, waiting rooms, and on family room bookshelves.
