Excerpt from My Contemporaries, Vol. 1: 1830 1870 IN venturing to publish the following pages, I wish to state, for the information of the reader, that they contain extracts and selections from a Diary commenced long years ago, and discon tinned in 1870. The motive Which led me at starting, to depart from the beaten track, was to try Whether the tedium and monotony of details of every-day life, might not be mitigated by giving a Wider scope to such a publication, and by discussing current events, and the men and measures, incidental to the period. Tatler is the iconic literary and society journal founded in 1709. It was issued three times a week for two years and aimed to inform its readers about the latest trends and events in social life. To make sure the editors are aware of all the news in society, they sent their secret reporters to the four most famous coffee houses of the time. Those were White's, Will's, Grecian Coffee House, St. James's Coffee House. The stories were written and edited by Richard Steel, who worked under the pseudonym, Isaac Bickerstaff. Yet later, this name was coverage for other contributors like the famous writer Jonathan Swift and Joseph Addison. After two years of life, Tatler left a deep trace in Britain's cultural and literary life. Numerous subsequent incarnations like Tatler in Edinburgh, Female Tatler, the Northern Tatler, and London Tatler continued for decades. Even nowadays, there is an eponymous British magazine of the same thematical direction. After the closure, all Tatler editions were issued as several volumes of collected works, presented here.

The Sunday Times bestselling edition of Chips Channon's remarkable diaries. Born in Chicago in 1897, 'Chips' Channon settled in England after the Great War, married into the immensely wealthy Guinness family, and served as Conservative MP for Southend-on-Sea from 1935 until his death in 1958. His career was unremarkable. His diaries are quite the opposite. Elegant, gossipy and bitchy by turns, they are the unfettered observations of a man who went everywhere and who knew everybody. Whether describing the antics of London society in the interwar years, or the growing scandal surrounding his close friends Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson during the abdication crisis, or the mood in the House of Commons in the lead up to the Munich crisis, his sense of drama and his eye for the telling detail are unmatched. These are diaries that bring a whole epoch vividly to life. A heavily abridged and censored edition of the diaries was published in 1967. Only now, sixty years after Chips's death, can an extensive text be shared. ________________________________ 'Chips perfectly embodied the qualities vital to the task: a capacious ear for gossip, a neat turn of phrase, a waspish desire to tell all, and easy access to the highest social circles across Europe.[...] Blending Woosterish antics with a Lady Bracknellesque capacity for acid comment. Replete with fascinating insights.' Jesse Norman, Financial Times

Recollections of Proust, Piaf, Colette, and a host of luminaries from Bohemian Paris For almost 50 years up until his death in 1963, Jean Cocteau held a unique place in French cultural life. The breadth of his artistic success bears witness to the astounding variety of his talents. In the fields of theater, cinema, art, ballet, and literature, Cocteau made many lifelong friends. Intimate portraits of some of the greatest artists of his age are included in this memorable memoir. Jean Cocteau was drawn to larger-than-life or seemingly unreal characters. He believed that their unreality was often the clue to the secrets of their personality. In descriptions of his contemporaries, Cocteau is able to illustrate everything that is accessible, sympathetic, memorable, durable, all-pervading, or dazzling about them. Ranging from the moving and atmospheric (the dying Proust in his cork-lined chamber) to the hilariously camp (Colette being carried from her apartment by sedan chair to have lunch across the road), it is in these portraits that the essence of his own work can be found. The portraits include Proust, Picasso, Piaf, Colette, Chaplin, and many more.

Interpreting Kierkegaard in the general context of Golden Age Denmark, this interdisciplinary anthology features articles which treat his various relations to his most famous Danish contemporaries. It aims to see them not as minor figures laboring in Kierkegaard's shadow but rather as significant thinkers and artists in their own right. The articles illuminate both Kierkegaard's influence on his contemporaries and their varied influences on him. By means of the analyses of these various relations, aspects of Kierkegaard's authorship are brought into new and insightful perspectives. The featured essays treat some of the most important figures from the time, representing the fields of philosophy, theology, literature, criticism and art.
