This collection of stories and vignettes-a multicultural anthology of women from diverse ethnic backgrounds—reveals how the mantle of culture and family is passed from woman to woman. As they vividly explode stereotypes, the pieces illustrate not only the courage of older women, but the received wisdom of younger women. Granddaughters remember their grandmothers as extraordinary women at once defiant and tradition bound, loving and stubbornly dogmatic. Some reinvent their grandmothers, others discover them for the first time. For example, Mary Helen Washington unmasks the word "freedpeople" in her grandmother's story to reveal the widespread aggression against supposedly freed slaves. Beryl Minkle's Bubba tells a tale of cultural and religious injustice that includes the oppression of women. Noted Native American writer Paula Gunn Allen reflects on her different cultural threads, as she searches for her Lebanese great-grandmother for whom she was named. Contributors include: Paula Gunn Allen, Marilou Awiakta, Robin Becker, Marguerite Guzman Bouvard, Laurence B. Calver, Christina Chiu, Michelle Cloonan, Martha Collins, Jean Gould, Padma Hejmadi, Anna Kimmage, Florence Ladd, Monty S. Leitch, Aimee Liu, Beryl Minkle, Naomi Shihab Nye, Patricia Traxler, Ana Aloma Velilla, Annelise Wagner, Mary Helen Washington

ABOUT THE BOOK GRANDMA'S GLASSES tells the story of a young girl who spends time with her artist-grandmother, and who learns from her grandmother not only the basics of painting but also what it takes to be a true artist. The emotional connection between the young girl and her grandmother is palpable, and the lifelong lessons learned by the girl will touch any reader's heart. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Born in Israel (then called "Palestine"), Judith Weinshall Liberman came to the United States in 1947 to pursue higher education. She earned four American university degrees including two in law, a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and an LL.M. from the University of Michigan Law School. After settling in the Boston area in 1956, she studied art and creative writing. Beginning in the early 1960s, and for four decades thereafter, Ms. Liberman created numerous series of artworks. Her art has been widely exhibited, and is represented in the collection of museums and other public institutions. During her long career in visual art, Ms. Liberman wrote several books, among them some picture books. Her book THE BIRD'S LAST SONG (Addison-Wesley, 1976), which she also illustrated, won a citation as one of the "fabulous books of the year." Since 2012, she has published several additional picture books, including ICE CREAM SNOW, THE LITTLE FAIRY, COLOR IN OUR WORLD, THE VERY OLD PAINTER AND HER HUSBAND, HAIFA, ANGEL'S PUPPIES, THE GIANT HOUSE, THE BEE AND THE BUTTERFLY, THE MOUNTAIN, THE TUNNEL, THE OLD DOLL, THE LITTLE SONGBIRD, FIFTEEN FABLES, TWELVE MORE FABLES, THE BIRD WHO WENT TO HEAVEN, A PARAKEET FOR ERIC, TALES OF HUMAN FOIBLES, IN THE MILITARY CEMETERY, THE GIRL AND THE PIGEONS, MORE TALES OF HUMAN FOIBLES, MICHAEL AND THE FLAG, WHAT WILL I BE?, IF I HAD THE POWER, IF I WERE RICH, LUCY AND THE SNOWMAN, THE WHIRLPOOL, THE LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET, TALE OF THE ROMAN NUMERALS, THE BRIDGE and IF I HAD A LITTLE SISTER. Judith Weinshall Liberman's archives can be found in the Arts Department of the Boston Public Library and at the Smithsonian Archives of American Art. ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR GRANDMA'S GLASSES is the twenty-first book on which Judith Weinshall Liberman, the author, has collaborated with Gail Davis, the illustrator. Since Ms. Liberman did not feel that, in light of her deteriorated eyesight, she could do justice to illustrating GRANDMA'S GLASSES herself, she selected a fine artist, Ms. Gail Davis, to create the illustrations under the author's guidance. The two had previously collaborated on THE LITTLE FAIRY, on THE VERY OLD PAINTER AND HER HUSBAND, on ANGEL'S PUPPIES, on THE GIANT HOUSE, on THE MOUNTAIN, on THE TUNNEL, on THE OLD DOLL, on FIFTEEN FABLES, on TWELVE MORE FABLES, on A PARAKEET FOR ERIC, on TALES OF HUMAN FOIBLES, on IN THE MILITARY CEMETERY, on MORE TALES OF HUMAN FOIBLES, on MICHAEL AND THE FLAG, on IF I HAD THE POWER, on IF I WERE RICH, on THE WHIRLPOOL, on THE LETTERS OF THE ALPHABET, on TALE OF THE ROMAN NUMERALS, and on THE BRIDGE. In the present book, Ms. Davis beautifully captures the spirit of the story and of its characters.

That last time I walked down the stairs, I remember my household help waiting to bid me goodbye. I have been up and down those oak-colored swirling stairs so many times, but they had never seemed that long before - like eternity this time. I take a step down with one foot, but the other does not want to follow. Yet, I know that I have to; I have no choice. I go to each and every room in the house. Here is where I usually sit and have lunch. That is his seat; I remember and see everyone sitting down having lunch. My six children each have their own seat and no one ever dares sit in the other’s place.

The story of Ray Pettit is the story of America. a country of decent and generous people, a country with a heritage and system of government based on liberty and the rights of individuals, a country where opportunity has no bounds. Encouraged by his mill-worker parents, who were lacking in formal education but not in intelligence, character, and love for their children, he used his natural ability in mathematics and high-level academic achievement as a springboard to great accomplishments in engineering, some of which contributed to the development of today's modem cellphone technology .Mill-Village Boy begins with the story of a barefoot boy in overalls, in the small town of Canton, Georgia, during the depression years of the 1930s. Unconditionally loved by his parents, Ray Pettit went from Class Valedictorian to graduation from Georgia Tech with a degree in Electrical Engineering. This was followed by Masters and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, and outstanding achievements in industry and academia. Mill-Village Boy has elements of intrigue and danger, love and adventure, comedy and sadness, loyalty and betrayal. . . a fascinating description of an exciting and rewarding life!

Katie, seventeen, has a motorcycle accident and an out-of-body meeting with deceased eye-bank-donor, her unknown Grandmother Regan (O'Neil). Katie, struggling with ideals and identity, has nightmares as her grandmother in Ireland and Patrick's wife, a womanizer and illusionist. Patrick assumes the identity of a leprechaun in her closet and a threatening vapor in her grandmother's house, until dispelled by visions. In Part Two, Katie is happily married to Brad Shaughnessy and has their first baby. Katie is frightened by a man at her door, Jake MacNamara, who looks like Patrick of her nightmares. He hounds her family, seeking his inheritance from his deceased wife, Ellen O'Neil. Presumed dead, Jake MacNamara finds Patrick and demands the return of his I.D., but Patrick's blarney convinces Jake to become a lucrative partner. Patrick constantly fouls Jake's efforts to become "himself." Their scheme backfires and they are routed as imposters, Patrick to hospital and Jake to jail.

The acclaimed author of The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine “explores the peculiarities of familial relations to tremendous result” (Asymptote). A Lit Hub Most Anticipated Book of 2021 Max lives with his grandparents in a residential home for refugees in Germany. When his grandmother—a terrifying, stubborn matriarch and a former Russian primadonna—moved them from the Motherland it was in search of a better life. But she is not at all pleased with how things are run in Germany: the doctors and teachers are incompetent, the food is toxic, and the Germans are generally untrustworthy. His grandmother has been telling Max that he is an inept, clueless weakling since he was a child and she’d spend the day sitting in the back of his classroom to be sure he came to no harm. While he may be a dolt in his grandmother’s eyes, Max is bright enough to notice that his stoic and taciturn grandfather has fallen hopelessly in love with their neighbor, Nina. When a child is born to Nina that is the spitting image of Max’s grandfather, things come to a hilarious if dramatic head. Everybody will have to learn to defend themselves from Max’s all-powerful grandmother. Alina Bronsky, author of The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine, writes of family dysfunction and machinations with a droll and biting humor, a tremendous ear for dialog, and a generous heart that is forgiving of human weakness. “[A] comic feel-bad novel. Bronsky has a Dickensian flair for writing about miserable children—or, rather, the miseries of childhood.” —Vulture
