A great university in turbulent times From the deluge of World War II vets on the GI bill through the 1960s radicalism that made national headlines, the University of Wisconsin's history has been a part of American history. Historians, as well as the University's hundreds of thousands of alumni, faculty, staff, and students, will welcome this fourth volume covering the University's recent past. E. David Cronon and John W. Jenkins record in lively, readable prose a period that began with the influx of returning war veterans, more than doubling the University's enrollment in a single year. They explore the dark McCarthy era of loyalty oaths and blacklists during the 1950s and detail the actions of University president E. B. Fred, who stood out among American academic leaders for his commitment to principle and fair play. The turbulent 1960s, which opened with students reporting on their summertime Freedom Ride experiences throughout the American South and ended with the Vietnam War-related bombing of Sterling Hall in 1970, are a record of how an era of idealism gave way to one characterized by angry dissent and disorder, the rise of women's liberation, flower power, black power, and student power. The history concludes with the passage of legislation creating the University of Wisconsin System of campuses in 1971--an action that followed nearly three decades of experiments, compromises, and political struggles involving several governors.

This third volume of the history of the University of Wisconsin, Politics, Depression, and War, 1925-1945, continues the history of the famous institution that has become today's University of Wisconsin-Madison. It carries the story forward from 1925 to the end of World War II, as the University was planning for the post-war influx of returning veterans. Volumes I and II, by Professors Merle Curti and Vernon Carstensen, were published in 1949 as part of the University's centennial celebration. In Volume III, E. David Cronon and John W. Jenkins provide a lively and readable account of the significant political, social, and educational transformations between 1925 and 1945, emphasizing the effect of Wisconsin's partisan politics on the University, the growth of the faculty's role in institutional governance, the development of close-knit faculty and student communities, and the ways in which the University maintained and even enhanced its scholarly reputation in a difficult era of history. The authors also look at the expansion of University outreach activities, especially the development of a major instructional center in Milwaukee (later to become the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee), extension centers throughout the state, and the new medium of educational broadcasting through the university station, WHA, considered "the oldest station in the nation." Read alone or in conjunction with the first two volumes, this is a thorough and absorbing history for anyone interested in this remarkable institution. Current faculty, alumni, students, and Wisconsin residents will find here a wealth of information enhanced by many historical photographs. An engaging additional feature are the cartoons, caricatures, and sketches from student publications that reveal a student perspective on the people and events of the period.

The field of American history has undergone remarkable expansion in the past century, all of it reflecting a broadening of the historical enterprise and democratization of its coverage. Today, the shape of the field takes into account the interests, identities, and narratives of more Americans than at any time in its past. Much of this change can be seen through the history of the Organization of American Historians, which, as its mission states, "promotes excellence in the scholarship, teaching, and presentation of American history, and encourages wide discussion of historical questions and equitable treatment of all practitioners of history." This century-long history of the Organization of American Historians-and its predecessor, the Mississippi Valley Historical Association-explores the thinking and writing by professional historians on the history of the United States. It looks at the organization itself, its founding and dynamic growth, the changing composition of its membership and leadership, the emphasis over the years on teaching and public history, and pedagogical approaches and critical interpretations as played out in association publications, annual conferences, and advocacy efforts. The majority of the book emphasizes the writing of the American story by offering a panorama of the fields of history and their development, moving from long-established ones such as political history and diplomatic history to more recent ones, including environmental history and the history of sexuality

This book brings together the interdisciplinary reflections of Christian scholars and poets, to explore how ecological virtues can foster the flourishing of our home planet in the face of unprecedented environmental change and devastation. Its central questions are: What virtues are needed for us to be better caretakers of our home planet? What vices must we extinguish if we are to flourish on the earth? What is the connection between such virtues and vices and the flourishing of all creatures? Each contribution offers insight on ecological virtue ethical questions through disciplinary lenses ranging from biology, geology, and economics, to literature, theology, and philosophy. The chapters feature the legacy and lessons of senior scholars reflecting on a lifetime of earthkeeping work, highlight global concerns and perspectives, and include compelling poetic reflections. Focusing on the way in which human vices and virtues drive so many of our ecological problems and solutions, the volume engages timely issues of environmental importance – such as environmental racism, interfaith dialogue, ecological philosophies of work and economics, marine pollution, ecological despair, hope and humility – encouraging fresh reflection and action. It will be of interest to those working in theology and religious studies, philosophy, ethics, and environmental studies.

Researchers have long had an interest in dental morphology as a genetic proxy to reconstruct population history. Much interest was fostered by the use of standard plaques and associated descriptions that comprise the Arizona State University Dental Anthropology System, developed by Christy G. Turner, II and students. This system has served as the foundation for hundreds of anthropological studies for over 30 years. In recognition of that success, this volume brings together some of the world's leading dental morphologists to expand upon the concepts and methods presented in the popular The Anthropology of Modern Human Teeth (Cambridge, 1997), leading the reader from method to applied research. After a preparatory section on the current knowledge of heritability and gene expression, a series of case studies demonstrate the utility of dental morphological study in both fossil and more recent populations (and individuals), from local to global scales.

Walter Byers And The Ncaa written by Ronald A. Smith and has been published by University of Tennessee Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-05-16 with Biography & Autobiography categories.
Walter Byers, the first executive director of the NCAA, oversaw the organization’s transformation from a small rule-making body into a billion-dollar enterprise that wielded immense power over collegiate athletics. In Walter Byers and the NCAA, historian Ronald A. Smith delves into the complexities of Byers’s leadership during a period of great cultural and institutional change. Under Byers’s guidance, the NCAA navigated significant milestones, such as the racial integration of college sports and the passage of Title IX, which mandated gender equality in athletics. At the same time, the commercialization of college football and basketball during his tenure led to skyrocketing coaching salaries and television contracts, pushing the NCAA into a new, profit-driven era. Smith provides a nuanced portrait of Byers, showing him as a man who remained committed to the ideal of the nonprofessional athlete, even as college athletics evolved around him. Yet Byers’s perspective shifted later in his career, as he began to question the fairness of this system. In his book, Unsportsmanlike Conduct, Byers publicly criticized the exploitation of student athletes, a stance that foreshadowed today’s debates about athletes’ rights and NIL compensation. Smith's work not only offers an in-depth look at Byers’s role in the NCAA's expansion but also critiques the institution’s long-standing emphasis on amateurism. The book underscores how the tension between amateur ideals and the increasing commercialization and professionalization of college sports has persisted, both during and after Byers’s tenure. Ultimately, Smith provides a compelling study of one of the most influential and controversial figures in the history of American sports governance.
