The inside story from one of our true music legends - pianist, teacher, arranger and bandleader, Doug Caldwell MNZM. In My Life In The Key Of Jazz, Doug provides a fascinating and entertaining journey through the world he knows so well - a place of high-browed auditoriums, and low and smoky late-night jazz clubs, a world of eccentric punters, fans and the musicians who made it their own. Through more than 65 years of professional performance Doug has worked with a veritable who's who of acclaimed musicians and entertainers including: Henry Mancini, Mavis Rivers, Wild Bill Davison, Ronnie Scott, Sir Harry Secombe, Georgie Fame, Al Cohn, Cal Collins, Scott Hamilton and Don Rader, together with a wealth of New Zealand greats. Whether from the concert stage and piano bar or through his compositions and arangements on radio and television, Doug has left a formidable legacy. One of the few jazzmen of his generation still standing, still performing, still able to tell the tales - tall and true.

Music Is My Life is the first comprehensive analysis of Louis Armstrong's autobiographical writings (including his books, essays, and letters) and their relation to his musical and visual performances. Combining approaches from autobiography theory, literary criticism, intermedia studies, cultural history, and musicology, Daniel Stein reconstructs Armstrong's performances of his life story across various media and for different audiences, complicating the monolithic and hagiographic views of the musician. The book will appeal to academic readers with an interest in African American studies, jazz studies, musicology, and popular culture, as well as general readers interested in Armstrong's life and music, jazz, and twentieth-century entertainment. While not a biography, it provides a key to understanding Armstrong's oeuvre as well as his complicated place in American history and twentieth-century media culture.

A memoir of the Jazz Age and a life profoundly influenced by it My Life in E-flat is the remarkable memoir of a woman who witnessed some of the most important movements in the history of jazz. Through her autobiography, Chan Parker provides intimate insights into the music and into life with Charlie Parker, the key figure in the development of bebop and one of the most important of all jazz musicians. Born Beverly Dolores Berg in New York City at the height of the Jazz Age, Parker's father was a producer of vaudeville shows and her mother was a dancer in Florenz Ziegfeld's Midnight Frolic. Parker became part of the jazz culture as a nightclub dancer and later as the wife of jazz saxophonists Charlie Parker and then Phil Woods. In a moving and candid portrait of Charlie Parker, the author describes in harrowing detail a man of incredible talent besieged with addictions and self-destructiveness. She painfully recounts his death at the age of 35 while married to her and its effect on her life as well as on the musical world. Parker's honest portrait of one of the most gifted musicians in jazz provides unique insight into the history of the music and the difficulties faced by African American performers during the 1940s. Parker also reflects on her struggle to find her own voice and on her work with Clint Eastwood on the film biography of Charlie Parker, Bird (1988).

Although born and raised in Massachusetts, trumpeter Max Kaminsky made his big splash in Chicago in the late 20s, and later New York, with such luminaries as Eddie Condon, Gene Krupa, Bud Freeman, and Jimmy McPartland. In Jazz Band, Kaminsky provides priceless recollections of these and other colleagues like Bix Beiderbecke ("I love the way he plays, but I can't stand the way he lives."); Pee Wee Russell (."..a shy, mournful-looking man, suffering the tortures of the extremely sensitive..."); Tommy Dorsey ("Working with (him) was like cooking on a hot stove that might explode at any moment..."); Billie Holiday (."..her haughtiness hid a shyness so vast that she spoke in practically a whisper."); Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Hot Lips Page, Artie Shaw, Jack Teagarden, Joe Venuti, Dave Tough, and the others who changed American popular music forever. Kaminsky's brash, crackling prose captures the ecstasy of the music, the camaraderie and hostilities within the jazz world, and the fast life enjoyed by him and his friends.
