My Motheras Cooking is in memory of the woman who raised me and instilled in me her keen sense of cooking for taste and visual presentation. Cooking for my mother was not hit or miss even though she never used a recipe. Cooking was drilled by experience and the need to survive, for her family consisted of twelve brothers and sisters and her father was a demon when it came to food. He died of the gout. What I wanted to do for her, and for those who remember her as she was before the ravages of daughter-in-laws and sons, is to let the world see our island, Symi, and its heritage, being who we are as daughters of our mothers. To be a woman entails more than to continue the race; it means to nurture that race and cooking is the most intense form of nurturing and presentation of our cooking an open avowal to wanting to please as we nurture through grace and good taste. Symi was a woman who was rumored to be like Circe, either a witch or a goddess. She was known and seen to have captured men and eaten them. But that was the past! Today, we, in Symi, cook like our mothers.

My Mother's Kitchen is an enchanting place filled with promise, change and good food. If the weathered walls of this magical room could talk they would tell the story of Meena and her childhood life. Each chapter is a slice in her young life and depicts her spunk and youthful spirit. A visit to the local Fruit and Flower Show becomes an adventure as told by Meena. Her distress at finding out about her aunt's dark secret or her joy of making a new friend are all told in her naïve, yet pure voice. Her mother is a central character in her life and it is no wonder that the kitchen is a special place of healing and rejuvenation, not only for Meena but for other characters like Kashi and Ayah. So what do you remember about your kitchen as you were growing up? What all went on there besides cooking and dishwashing? Did your mom preside—and how did you know it was her domain? Mom and Me in the Kitchen is filled with choice stories from bestselling cookbook author, Phyllis Pellman Good, along with her selection of stories and memories from the thousands of followers of the Fix-It and Forget-It.com blog and Facebook page. The memories and stories are deliciously entertaining! And they cover these subjects: What mealtime was like in my childhood home. Who cooked. What foods we each anticipated. What happened to picky eaters. Did everyone sit down and eat together? What we talked about. Kitchen accidents and embarrassing moments. Was Mom home? Who was involved. What happened. A special meal that Mom made for me. What was on the menu. Why I'll never forget it. How I learned to cook. It was all because of Mom. Or, it was all because Mom wasn't there. The first meal I made. What I learned never to do again. If I could go back to one time in the kitchen with Mom while I was growing up … What happened. Why that time still stands out to me. Good chance you'll laugh and cry. Guaranteed that you'll revisit your own growing-up kitchen and think about life with your kids in the kitchen. My Mother's Kitchen is a funny, moving memoir about a son’s discovery that his mother has a genius for understanding the intimate connections between cooking, people and love Peter Gethers wants to give his aging mother a very personal and perhaps final gift: a spectacular feast featuring all her favorite dishes. The problem is, although he was raised to love food and wine he doesn’t really know how to cook. So he embarks upon an often hilarious and always touching culinary journey that will ultimately allow him to bring his mother’s friends and loved ones to the table one last time. The daughter of a restaurateur—the restaurant was New York’s legendary Ratner’s—Judy Gethers discovered a passion for cooking in her 50s. In time, she became a mentor and friend to several of the most famous chefs in America, including Wolfgang Puck, Nancy Silverton and Jonathan Waxman; she also wrote many cookbooks and taught cooking alongside Julia Child. In her 80s, she was robbed of her ability to cook by a debilitating stroke. But illness has brought her closer than ever to her son: Peter regularly visits her so they can share meals, and he can ask questions about her colorful past, while learning her kitchen secrets. Gradually his ambition becomes manifest: he decides to learn how to cook his mother the meal of her dreams and thereby tell the story of her life to all those who have loved her. With his trademark wit and knowing eye, Peter Gethers has written an unforgettable memoir about how food and family can do much more than feed us—they can nourish our souls.

For many of us, our mother's kitchen is a place where memoriesand meals are shared. Trish Magwood is no exception. Her mother fed four hungry kids delicious, simple foodevery day; they always sat at the table, and they always haddessert. It's also where they carved pumpkins, pulled out firstteeth, learned to tie shoes, and stuck together as a large andboisterous family over yummy food. In Trish's grandmother'skitchen, it was the same story, as it is in her own. Trish lovesfeeding her three children and husband new recipes, and triedand true favourites from her mother and grandmother. It's allabout preserving the family table, no matter how busy our liveshave become. Collected here are early century recipes for tomatobutter and crab apple jelly, sixties and seventies classics likecheese soufflé and Cottage Barbecue Pineapple Chicken, andnew favourites such as Miami-Style Beef Short Ribs and MockButter Chicken. Interspersed are loads of gorgeous photos offood, memorabilia and the family's kitchen garden. Inspired by a sisterhood of good family cooks, In MyMother's Kitchen is a collection of great home cooking remembered, preserved and renewed, but from a contemporary, busyworking-mom's perspective. Our moms may have had a bitmore time to spend in the kitchen, but Trish knows how to giveus that same great food faster, without compromising flavour.
