Canada's western wilderness was the scene of fur trader John Tod's extraordinary life. Born in a Scottish village in 1794, Tod spent 40 adventurous years working for the Hudson's Bay Company and in his later years, served on the first Legislative Council of the fledgling colony of Vancouver Island. Posted all over the Company's vast territory - York Factory, McLeod Lake, Fort Alexandria, Island Lake, Fort Kamloops - he spent most of his years in New Caledonia. A spirited and prickly man he was a free thinker, impatient with authority and distrustful of many of his superiors. He was also a lifelong and loyal friend to many of his fur-trade colleagues, especially John Work, the Ermatinger brothers and James Murray Yale. Tod saw astonishing changes in the west, from the bitter warfare between the Hudson's Bay Company and the Nor'Westers, to settlement by pioneers and the conventions of the polite colonial society. Few lives have spanned such contrasts. This definitive biography presents the picture of the unusual man in an exciting era.

King (English, U. of Florida) draws on the work of Kristeva, Bakhtin, and Henry Louis Gates Jr. to explore the interpretive guidelines necessary to read what she calls the "metatext" of names, where these chosen words comment on and revise the action in a novel by giving voice to unspoken themes and events. Theology Of Wagner S Ring Cycle I written by Richard H. Bell and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-01 with Religion categories.
Wagner’s Ring is one of the greatest of all artworks of Western civilization, but what is it all about? The power and mystery of Wagner’s creation was such that even he felt he stood before his work ‘as though before some puzzle’. A clue to the Ring’s greatness lies in its multiple avenues of self-disclosure and the corresponding plethora of interpretations that over the years has granted ample scope for directors, and will no doubt do so well into the distant future. One possible interpretation, which Richard Bell argues should be taken seriously, is the Ring as Christian theology. In this first of two volumes, Bell considers, among other things, how the composer’s Christian interests may be detected in the ‘forging’ of his Ring, in his appropriation of sources (whether they be myths and sagas, writers, poets, or philosophers), and in works composed around the same time, especially his Jesus of Nazareth.

Paper reissue of the 1972 edition. Crane argues that the social institution responsible for the growth of scientific knowledge is the small group of highly productive scientists who, sharing the same field of study, set priorities for research, recruit and train students, communicate with one another, and thus monitor the rapidly changing structure of knowledge in their field. First published (hardcover) in 1988. Nadel exposes some of the ways Ellison situates Invisible man in regard to the American literary tradition, comments on that tradition, and, in doing so, alters it. Writing Backwards written by Alexander Manshel and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-11-21 with Literary Criticism categories.
Contemporary fiction has never been less contemporary. Midcentury writers tended to set their works in their own moment, but for the last several decades critical acclaim and attention have fixated on historical fiction. This shift is particularly dramatic for writers of color. Even as the literary canon has become more diverse, cultural institutions have celebrated Black, Asian American, Latinx, and Indigenous novelists almost exclusively for their historical fiction. Writing Backwards explores what the dominance of historical fiction in the contemporary canon reveals about American literary culture. Alexander Manshel investigates the most celebrated historical genres—contemporary narratives of slavery, the World War II novel, the multigenerational family saga, immigrant fiction, and the novel of recent history—alongside the literary and academic institutions that have elevated them. He examines novels by writers including Toni Morrison, Viet Thanh Nguyen, Colson Whitehead, Julia Alvarez, Leslie Marmon Silko, Michael Chabon, Julie Otsuka, Yaa Gyasi, Ben Lerner, and Tommy Orange in the context of MFA programs, literary prizes, university syllabi, book clubs, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Manshel studies how historical fiction has evolved over the last half century, documenting the formation of the newly inclusive literary canon as well as who and what it still excludes. Offering new insight into how institutions shape literature and the limits of historical memory, Writing Backwards also considers recent challenges to the historical turn in American fiction.

It’s the first day of summer, and preteens Tod and Barney are going to make the most of it. Off they go into the fun-filled woods and marshes, where they find frog eggs, rabbits, tadpoles, and an Abraham Lincoln-like character with a stovepipe hat and cane. Who is this weirdo anyway? The siren at the mental hospital blasted about the same time the summer adventurers spotted the strange man. Could he be—? Tod and Barney are two energetic boys whose antics and excursions will bring many a laugh from the juvenile reader. Chubby Barney seems to eat one meal a day—all day long. And he’s always dragging along 99-percent-useless items, just in case! Imaginative Tod constantly comes up with new ideas for summer projects, from building tadpole ponds to feeding uncooperative rabbits to finding out who the freak in the tall black hat is. Both fellows are a little afraid (though they won’t admit it) of the mysterious man. How does he suddenly appear from nowhere and then vanish again just as quickly? Is he some kind of superhuman creature or just a crackpot, or what? The Mystery of the Man in the Tall Black Hat makes an entertaining story for the juvenile set. Its exciting portrayal of junior happenings and a touch of mystery keep the reader hanging on until he reaches a surprise ending. The book shows daily Christianity in action and presents Christ as the one true Savior and Friend. Who is “the man in the tall black hat”? Read on and find out for yourself!
