When my parents were in their early eighties, it became apparent to my brother and I that they could no longer conduct the routine activities of life. They no longer were able to decide which pieces of mail were bills and which pieces were solicitations for magazine subscriptions or credit cards. They were no longer able to make decisions which required assimilating new pieces of information and weighing the consequences of one choice versus another. They had difficulty in making doctor appointments and communicating to financial institutions. My father had lost all sense of time and place, often declaring that he was not at home in the house which he had occupied for the last 50 years. And yes, he sometimes disavowed that my mother was his wife. My brother and I cared for my parents, managing their affairs for four years before the death of my father. We paved our own path, having little guidance from the medical establishment. After my father's death, I concluded that the medical establishment has little knowledge of how to care for people with dementia. I wrote the stories of my care of my parents and their condition of Alzheimer's dementia in the hope that the nation will redirect its Alzheimer's funding from cure to care. The development of knowledge of caring of dementia patients is sorely lacking in our medical establishment and the knowledge of how to care for dementia patients is required for the peace of mind of their relatives, their children and the medical institutions of the country.

‘Fading From Memory’ is a son’s personal journal covering the period 2006-2009, during which his parents are first diagnosed with, and eventually succumb to, Alzheimer’s disease. The journal follows the family’s responses to the progressively more desperate needs of their parents with humour, insight, compassion, exasperation, enterprise and, finally, resignation. This book paints a raw, honest, but at times also heartwarming, picture of what really happens when Alzheimer’s strikes - twice. The author exhibits a deep and natural curiosity about what is happening to his parents' minds, how they came to be as they are, what steps can be taken to alleviate their troubles, and what choices the family has available. As fast as problems come at them, the family put up solutions, until eventually they can do no more. Throughout this very testing time, suffered by all the family, the author's humour enables him, and the reader, to step back and take stock, refresh the spirit, and return to the battle renewed.

Charlie’s dad has been told that he has Alzheimer’s disease, a kind of dementia. Dad has to explain what this means to help prepare Charlie for what might happen. To help themselves deal with this, the family think of the Alzheimer’s as an unwanted guest in their home, and they call him Al, short for Alzheimer’s. Dad’s dementia means that he might say or do strange things, but thinking of Al as a person means the family can blame him rather than Dad. They even laugh at some of the things Al makes Dad do. The family know that Al won’t go away, and they pull together to support one another as Dad’s condition gets worse. They know that Dad can’t always help what he says or does, but whatever happens, even when he can no longer tell them, he still loves them from the ends of the earth and back. This is Charlie’s story.
