As political events unfold from the assassination of the Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir presumptive to the Austro-Hungarian throne), the resulting sparks are sent flying across a central Europe that is primed to explode igniting the catastrophic events of the Great War. This original and gripping short story follows the ordeals of an ordinary middle-class Belgian family in the summer of 1914, caught up in the invasion of their neutral country. An estimated 1 to 1.5 million men, women and children found themselves in exile in France, The Netherlands and Great Britain between August 1914 and November 1918. A recorded 250,000 escaped to Great Britain; 16,000 arriving in the port of Folkestone, Kent during a single day in October 1914.The story is narrated in the first person through the eyes of 7-year-old Jaak Maes, the eldest son of a Pieter and Francijn Maes. Pieter is a reasonably successful businessman and unlikely hero in this WW1 historical fiction, depicting the civilian exodus of Belgium, including its own Government, during late July and August 1914.This is the debut short story of a young author, James E H Fitzgerald, who started writing this aged 10 and completed it in time for the 100-year anniversary of the end of WW1. Although only aged 11, this has as good a story line as any Hollywood blockbuster.Personal note from James: I am dedicating my first ever short story, to the estimated one million exiled Belgian people who fled their homeland from the summer of 1914 until 1918.Whilst my story is fictional, I have tried to keep as close as I could to historical events and dates. Some elements of the story I have drawn from my own life, including not only those of my two brothers George and Henry, but also my Grandad John (Fitzgerald) who was born in July 1932.Thank you for buying this book (whether in digital, printed or audio format) as I am donating 25% of the royalty payment of this short story to two worthy causes: The Royal British Legi

The Road to War examines how presidential commitments can lead to the use of American military force, and to war. Marvin Kalb notes that since World War II, "presidents have relied more on commitments, public and private, than they have on declarations of war, even though the U.S. Constitution declares rather unambiguously that Congress has the responsibility to "declare" war.

This is a book about two forms of service that may appear contradictory: war-fighting and peacemaking, military service and social entrepreneurship. In 2001, Marine officer-in-training Rye Barcott cofounded a nongovernmental organization with two Kenyans in the Kibera slum of Nairobi. Their organization-Carolina for Kibera-grew to become a model of a global movement called participatory development, and Barcott continued volunteering with CFK while leading Marines in dangerous places. It Happened on the Way to War is a true story of heartbreak, courage, and the impact that small groups of committed citizens can make in the world.

A Terrifying Road to Freedom is the memoir of Lucy Mayer, whose family survived in Hungary under the Nazis, only to be invaded by Russia after the war. My story begins in 1938 in the peacetime of my childhood in Budapest, Hungary. Those years before the war were all happy memories. The good times were over when the war began in our country in 1943-44. We endured airstrikes all around us and had to hide in a bunker to save our lives. Then came the terrifying ground invasion of the Red Army. After World War II, the communist government controlled Hungary. We continued to feel afraid for our safety, as Hungarians were arrested, tortured, and killed by the Russians. Eventually, Hungary had enough and an uprising began in 1956. The Russian Army overcame the Hungarian Revolution, but it provided an opportunity for my brother, Steve, and I to escape. We risked our lives and left our family behind, not even able to say goodbye. It was a difficult journey, but we were elated to arrive in the U.S.A. With no money and only the clothes on our backs, we knew it would be difficult to begin our new lives in America, but at least we had freedom!

A riveting first-person account of a brave young man caught up in a cataclysmic World War. This is the story of Captain William C. Frodsham, Jr., who shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor enlisted in the U.S. Army Infantry, where he excelled in basic training, became a junior officer, and eventually led a combat boat team ashore on Omaha Beach. Six days later, in French hedgerow country and under withering German fire, Frodsham was wounded and taken prisoner. He spent the next year as a German POW, where he suffered great deprivation before finally being liberated by advancing Russian forces. His training, his courage, his capture. The reader is taken for a first-person tour of the times at home and then tunneled into a vastly different world on the battlefield and in a German prisoner-of-war camp. A truly remarkable story.
