I stayed on deck some time, as the scene was a rare one. The great ta'ble mountain back of the city inspired me with a feeling of awe, so black and grim did it appear in the bath of moonlight all about it. The shore has a sweep almost equal to the Bay of Naples and in the semi-darkness resembled it very much. I stopped in the chart-room as I came below and was much im pressed by the thought that I was at the end of the earth, and out beyond was the unknown sea. My mind reverted to my boy-time romances, and I went to sleep wondering if, some where out there upon the trackless water, old Van der Decken was still trying to drive the phantom ship against the ceaseless head winds his blasphemy had provoked. But on all essential points in the political situation, and even the geography, I was as ignorant as South Africans would be of the Indian frontier. I had only this advantage, that for the last ten years almost my sole occupation in life had been travelling in little known countries and reporting what I saw and heard there. SO as soon as I had put the last remaining touches on my book of travels then about to be published, I eagerly read up the works on South African history and travel which I had brought on board for the purpose of forming in my mind a groundwork on which to build. On my arrival in Cape Town, in the beginning of December, I found the Situation in the Transvaal was fast reaching a crisis. Mr. Lionel Phillips, the President of the Chamber of Mines at Johannes burg, had but recently made a speech in which he detailed the disabilities under which the huge gold mining industry laboured, and hinted in strong terms that, were concessions of some sort not granted by the Boer Government, the Uitlanders (or foreign residents) might be compelled to resort to force to gain their ends and everywhere people were saying that trouble was pending.
