Excerpt from My Years on the Stage How long ago is it, old schoolmate, since two "middlers" from Exeter rollicked down to New York for an Easter vacation, and on an imperishable evening glamoured their young memories permanently with Augustin Daly's company of players at Daly's Theatre and the Taming of the Shrew? What a good and merry town was brown-stone New York then, when one stood at the doors of the Fifth Avenue Hotel to see the pretty girls from all over the country parading by after the matinee; when the Avenue was given over to proud horses and graceful women; when there were no automobiles and only a few telephones; when Ada Rehan was playing Katherine at Daly's and when those two Exeter schoolboys got the impression that the whole place belonged, in a general way, to the Petruchio who tamed her, John Drew! The earth must have swung round the sun a few times since then, my schoolmate, for now comes that gay young Petruchio before us with his Memoirs! Excerpt from Forty Years on the Stage: Others (Principally) And Myself I think I hear the reader say, What another actor's reminiscences and I am fain to admit that there has been a plentiful crop of them in the last few years. Let me hasten to give my reason and ask excuse for adding mine to the list. In some articles I wrote on stage matters in the Nineteenth Century a few years ago, I was able to say with perfect truth, I have never been interviewed. Ihave neverinspireda paragraph. Ihave never made speeches, and I may add I have never been photographed except at the request of my manager at the time. I was taught, in my early days on the stage, that the actor's duty was behind the proscenium, and that his best and most telling pronouncements were those made when the curtain was up. In that faith I have lived and worked earnestly and sincerely. It is an old-fashioned and out-oi - date creed in these self asserting days, but in the autumn of one's career it is too late to change, and it follows as a matter of course that I am not one of those who consider their lives, their doings or their thoughts of general or public interest. But in my forty-odd years on the stage I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Other Days Being Chronicles and Memories, of the Stage It has been my fortune and privilege, during a period of more than fifty years, to he closely associated with the men and women of the Theatre. Some of them have been comrades of mine; intimate friends; daily associates; accustomed to tell me of their joys and sorrows, and to ash and to follow my counsel in the conduct of their professional lives. Their rivalries and the contests of their coteries have surged around me; their triumphs have engaged my pen; their defeats have elicited my sympathy; and, - as it is a happiness to remember, - their finer achievements have, in many instances, been recorded and celebrated, in such a way as to gratify, cheer, and help them, by my literary zeal and industry. I have observed them closely and I have found them exceedingly interesting: sometimes humorous; sometimes pathetic; always sensitive; often sweet and gentle; still more frequently unconventional, hopeful, and gay, and therefore charming companions. Excerpt from From School to StageI sincerely h0pe I shall be judged very, very leniently in this, my first effort as anvauthoress. In fact, it is only because I have been approached so often to write the story of my stage career that I have attempted the task at all. And I would like to say that I should surely have given it up in despair long ago had not Mr. Bernard Parsons so kindly lent me his invaluable assistance in turning a chaotic pile of notes into - Well-sorne sort of order.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Sixty Years' Stage Service: Being a Record of the Life of Charles Morton, "the Father of the Halls" TO my dear brother William, who has always been an ardent collector Of facts concerning my various business ventures, I tender my thanks for his help in this narra tion of my public services, and to Mr. H. Chance Newton I am also greatly indebted for the trouble he has taken in the preparation Of this volume for the press. Long past the Psalmist's life-limit, I yet feel as though the pith and marrow Of my intelligence, and the dis criminating faculty Of catering for the million, show no trace Of waning power, and although I may scarcely dare to hope that my biographers will, in any future edition, be able to add much to what has been written herein, I feel as though the final chapter were farther Off now than I could have reasonably supposed it to be twenty years ago.
