Debra A. Moddelmog offers the first book to explore fully the process of reading and interpreting myth in fiction. Some literary scholars view myth criticism as passé, an approach to literature that enjoyed a heyday in the l950s and 1960s before being replaced by approaches that are considered to be more theoretically sophisticated and satisfying, such as feminism, new historicism, and deconstruction. Moddelmog argues that there are many good reasons not to cast out myth criticism from the community of critical approaches. Most obvious among them is that myth has attracted many writers of this century—from James Joyce to Thomas Pynchon, Virginia Woolf to Flannery O’Connor, Thomas Mann to Alain Robbe-Grillet, William Faulkner to Alberto Moravia—and that to ignore myth is to dismiss an essential part of their work. Moddelmog suggests that by reconstruing the relationship between myth and literature, we will find that mythic approaches are frequently not only necessary but also highly stimulating, engaging readers in many varieties of questions, quests, and conclusions. Thus in this study she provides a poetics for myth in twentieth-century fiction, arguing that the nature of myth is to inspire interpretation, that every myth carries with it an intertextual body of theories regarding its meaning and yet remains capable of evoking new meaning. When used in fiction, myth therefore functions like a language, with the reader attempting to negotiate meaning for the myth or its key actions, its mythemes, while at the same time responding to the interpretive cues of the text itself. Because of the complicated demands placed on readers by both the myth and the text, readers who pursue myth in fiction are not simple translators or reactors but rather are participants in a dialogue involving numerous texts, a dialogue that is finally interminable. In support of the poetics she proposes, Moddelmog presents several chapters devoted to the study of twentieth-century fiction in which the Oedipus myth appears. Each chapter focuses on a specific interpretative issue that is related to the experience of reading myth in fiction but one that also examines a genre of fiction in which the Oedipus myth recurs. Chapter 3 (on the science fiction of H. G. Wells, Jules Verne, Philip José Farmer, Philip K. Dick, and Roger Zelazny) reveals not only how a single mytheme can evoke a complex reading process but also how each reading of a work containing a myth influences the next reading of a similar work. Chapter 4 (on antidetective works written by Alain Robbe-Grillet, Michel Butor, and Thomas Pynchon) addresses genre questions that the mytheme as structural unit calls forth. Chapter 5 (on psychological fiction written by Flannery O’Connor, Alberto Moravia, and Max Frisch) looks at the appropriation of the Oedipus myth by psychoanalysis and the consequences of that appropriation by those who are reading and writing after Freud.

Homer's Iliad and Odyssey are the only early Greek heroic epics to have survived the transition to writing, even though extant evidence indicates that they emerged from a thriving oral culture. Among the missing are the songs of Boeotian Thebes. Homer's Thebes examines moments in the Iliad and Odyssey where Theban characters and thematic engagements come to the fore. Rather than sifting through these appearances to reconstruct lost poems, Elton Barker and Joel Christensen argue that the Homeric poems borrow heroes from Thebes to address key ideas--about politics, time, and genre--that set out the unique superiority of these texts in performance. By using evidence from Hesiod and fragmentary sources attributed to Theban tradition, Barker and Christensen explore Homer's appropriation of Theban motifs of strife and distribution to promote his tale of the sack of Troy and the returns home. As Homer's Thebes shows, this Theban material sheds light on the exceptionality of the Homeric epics through the notions of poetic rivalry and Panhellenism. Furthermore, by emphasizing a nonhierarchical model of "reading" the epics derived from oral-formulaic poetics, this book contributes to recent debates about allusion, neoanalysis, and intertextuality.

This book is a literary and topical analysis of a creation story of the Nuu-chah-nulth people, of Northwest Canada. The importance of this book is an attempt to recognize the cultural forms of religion or spirituality before the access of Western culture and to understand why they had come to accept Christianity differently from the Western world. The primary aim of this book was to study of the Nuu-chah-nulth origin myth and discover the continuing cultural/religious ideas stored in the Nuu-chah-nulth myth of origin. The book deals with the worldview of the Nuu-chah-nulth and religious thoughts obtained from their oral traditions. The beginning part of this book explored the cultural bases of how and why the tribal origin myths can inform us of an understanding of their worldview, religious, and theological concepts. The later part discusses what kind of theological, philosophical, relational, and cultural ideas emerge from the Nuu-chah-nulth origin myth. More specifically, the study explores the philosophical ideas of the Nuu-chah-nulth thoughts, examining how their views of God, or Creator, compare with those of other religions. It also looks at the cultural factors underlying the worldviews, and their influences on the formation of their religious ideas. Furthermore, observing their linguistic habits associated in expressions used in the origin myths, the study adjudicated how the contact with western Christianity altered the forms and contents of their myths, which could also shed light on how the Nuu-chah-nulth culturally appropriated Christianity.
