This series of HANDBOOKS OF LINGUISTICS AND COMMUNICATION SCIENCE is designed to illuminate a field which not only includes general linguistics and the study of linguistics as applied to specific languages, but also covers those more recent areas which have developed from the increasing body of research into the manifold forms of communicative action and interaction. For "classic" linguistics there appears to be a need for a review of the state of the art which will provide a reference base for the rapid advances in research undertaken from a variety of theoretical standpoints, while in the more recent branches of communication science the handbooks will give researchers both an overview and orientation. To attain these objectives, the series aims for a standard comparable to that of the leading handbooks in other disciplines, and to this end strives for comprehensiveness, theoretical explicitness, reliable documentation of data and findings, and up-to-date methodology. The editors, both of the series and of the individual volumes, and the individual contributors, are committed to this aim. The language of publication is English. The main aim of the series is to provide an appropriate account of the state of the art in the various areas of linguistics and communication science covered by each of the various handbooks; however no inflexible pre-set limits will is imposed on the scope of each volume. The series is open-ended, and can thus take account of further developments in the field. This conception, coupled with the necessity of allowing adequate time for each volume to be prepared with the necessary care, means that there is no set time-table for the publication of the whole series. Each volume is a self-contained work, complete in itself. The order in which the handbooks are published does not imply any rank ordering, but is determined by the way in which the series is organized; the editors of the whole series enlist a competent editor for each individual volume. Once the principal editor for a volume has been found, he or she then has a completely free hand in the choice of co-editors and contributors. The editors plan each volume independently of the others, being governed only by general formal principles. The series editors only intervene where questions of delineation between individual volumes are concerned. It is felt that this (modus operandi) is best suited to achieving the objectives of the series, namely to give a competent account of the present state of knowledge and of the perception of the problems in the area covered by each volume. By the early middle ages vernacular aristocratic traditions of heroic narration were firmly established in Western and Northern Europe. Although there are regional, linguistic and formal differences, one can observe a number of similarities. Oral literature disseminates a range of themes that are shared by narratives in most parts of the continent. In all the European regions, this tradition of heroic narration came into contact with Christianity, which led to modifications. Similar processes of adaptation and transformation can be traced everywhere in this field of early European vernacular narrative. But with the increasing specialization of academic fields over the last half century, inter-disciplinary dialogue has become increasingly difficult. The volume is a contribution to renew the inter-disciplinary dialogue about common themes, topics and motifs in Nordic, Roman, Anglo-Saxon and Germanic literature, and about the different methodologies to explore them.

Die Diskussion der Grundsätze der Sozialen Marktwirtschaft und ihre Anwendung auf die Herausforderungen der Gegenwart sind das Thema dieses Bandes, der auf den Ergebnissen des ersten Ordnungspolitischen Dialoges an der Westsächsischen Hochschule Zwickau im November 2007 basiert. Eine informative Gesamtorientierung über die internationale Forschung zum antiken Mythos in den letzten hundert Jahren war schon seit langem ein wissenschaftliches Desiderat. Dieser Forschungsbericht, hervorgegangen aus einer fünf Dezennien umfassenden ‚Arbeit am Mythos‘, bezieht sich als erster seiner Art als selektive Übersicht nicht nur auf den traditionellen altertumswissenschaftlichen Kernbereich (von den altorientalischen Vorlagen über die frühgriechischen Anfänge und die weitere Entwicklung in der griechisch-römischen Gesamtkultur bis zur christlichen Spätantike), sondern auch auf den in der Forschung zunehmend beachteten rezeptionsgeschichtlichen Zusatzbereich (von Byzanz und dem westlichen Mittelalter über Renaissance, Barock und Aufklärung bis zu Moderne und Postmoderne) sowie auf die neuerdings immer stärker im Blickpunkt stehende narratologische Bedeutung des Mythos im Rahmen der europäischen Erzählforschung. Zum Zielpublikum dieses Forschungsberichts gehören also nicht nur Klassische Philologen und Klassische Archäologen sowie Spezialisten der Altorientalistik, sondern auch Komparatisten und Kunstgeschichtler, Ethnologen und Religionswissenschaftler sowie alle Fachleute, die sich entweder mit der Nachwirkung des antiken Mythos in der mittelalterlichen und neuzeitlichen Literatur, Kunst und Geistesgeschichte beschäftigen oder mit seiner beachtlichen Rolle etwa im Verhältnis zu Sagen, Märchen und anderen narratologischen Kleingattungen. Der Epilog stellt auch die Frage nach den Möglichkeiten künftiger Mythosforschung. Die detaillierten Register garantieren eine denkbar weitgehende Erschließung des behandelten Gesamtmaterials.

In vormodernen Monarchien beobachten wir Widerspruch und Widerstand gegen einzelne Herrscher, ihre politischen Entscheidungen und ihre Verwaltung, aber in der Regel keine direkten Angriffe auf die Ordnungsprinzipien und das politische System. Wenn Unzufriedenheit zu Aufständen und Revolten führten, blieb es normalerweise bei einem bloßen Austausch des Regenten. Subtilere Methoden der Herrscherkritik konnten sich mittels fester Usancen oder spezifischer Codes und Spielregeln innerhalb des legalen Rahmens Gehör verschaffen und zielten darauf ab, die Qualitäten des Regenten zu verbessern oder spezifische Modi der Amtsführung zu reformieren. Diese verschiedenen Formen und Praktiken von Herrscherkritik in vormodernen monarchischen Gesellschaften sind Gegenstand dieses Bandes. When looking at pre-modern monarchical societies, one does not expect to observe fundamental dissent directed at the social order as such or at the political system. As a rule, criticism was limited to individual monarchs, their performance and decisions. While discontent could lead to insurrection and rebellion, which normally only culminated in the ruler being replaced by another monarchical figurehead, the subtler methods of voicing criticism were applied within a framework of legality, of a set of customs or of a code of rules of the game and intended to improve the performance of the incumbent or reform his conduct at court. The various forms of verbal or staged censure of rulers in pre-modern monarchical societies are the subject of this volume.
