Underwater Worlds throws open a new area in the emerging field of “blue” environmental humanities by exploring how subaqueous environments have been imagined and represented across cultures and media. The collection pursues this theme through various disciplinary perspectives and methodologies, including history, literary and film criticism, myth studies, legal studies and the history of art. The essays suggest that, since the nineteenth century, technologies of underwater exploration have generated novel sensory experiences that have destabilized conventional modes of representation and influenced new aesthetic forms from fiction and television to virtual reality. The collection also examines how representations of underwater environments have reflected and critiqued humans’ relationships with marine ecology and life-forms. It reflects on the deeper cultural and symbolic resonances of mythical figures such as mermaids, sea monsters and the ghosts of drowned seafarers. The contributions further reveal myriad political, ideological, gendered and racial dimensions of representing underwater environments.

The Wilhelmine Empire?s opening decades (1870s - 1880s) were crucial transitional years in the development of German modernism, both politically and culturally. Here Marsha Morton argues that no artist represented the shift from tradition to unsettling innovation more compellingly than Max Klinger. The author examines Klinger?s early prints and drawings within the context of intellectual and material transformations in Wilhelmine society through an interdisciplinary approach that encompasses Darwinism, ethnography, dreams and hypnosis, the literary Romantic grotesque, criminology, and the urban experience. His work, in advance of Expressionism, revealed the psychological and biological underpinnings of modern rational man whose drives and passions undermined bourgeois constructions of material progress, social stability, and class status at a time when Germans were engaged in defining themselves following unification. Landscapes form a central core of the princely picture gallery, covering the entire span of the collection from the late 14th to the mid-19th century. If the landscape at first appears not as the actual theme of the work, but only a view, a background staffage, it subsequently acquires increasing weight as a genre in its own right, and enjoys its first golden age in the 17th century, most of all among the Flemish and Dutch painters. These same artists have been represented by incomparable major works in the Princely Collections ? the introduction to the 1948 Lucerne catalogue observes that ?the eyes of the princely collectors have always been aimed at Belgium and Holland both in the past and in the present day. The exhibition covers the entire spectrum of landscape painting, through to recently acquired examples of urban landscapes, shown here for the first time. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries Arcadian landscapes were produced, ideal landscapes that were supposed to lead the visitor away to an imagined ancient world that had never existed in that form; a generation later, painters such as Ferdinand Georg Waldm?ller sought the light of the south and during the time of Biedermeier discovered plein-air painting, which would lead without a break to Impressionism. This period in particular could not be better covered than by the material of the Princely Collections; all the great names of the day are represented here by significant major works.

Diplomarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich Kunst - Malerei, Note: 1, Katholisch-Theologische Privatuniversität Linz (Kunstwissenschaft und Ästhetik), Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Kapitel 1 beschäftigt sich zu allererst mit dem Sintflutgemälde von Wtewael. Es widmet sich der Bildbeschreibung, Datierung, der Rezeptionsgeschichte, sowie der Biographie Wtewaels. Da sich der Inhalt des Gemäldes aufgrund der fehlenden Sintflut-Attribute wie z.B. einer Arche, Wassermassen oder ertrinkende Menschen dem ungeübten Betrachter zunächst nur über den Titel eröffnet, habe ich in Kapitel 2 versucht, mich dem Bild über die mythologische Vorlage zu nähern. Es geht in diesem Kapitel somit um eine kurze Einführung in den Mythos der Sintflut und dessen Überlieferungen, mit Schwerpunkt auf die alttestamentliche Überlieferung (Genesis 6,9-8,22)) sowie jener aus Ovids Metamorphosen. In Kapitel 3 werde ich eine kurze, auszugsweise Ikonographie der Sintflut bis zum 16. Jahrhundert bringen, um dem Leser die Einordnung des Gemäldes zu erleichtern, aber auch um mögliche Vorbilder zu zeigen. In Kapitel 4 zeige ich Vorbilder und Zeitgenossen Wtewaels. Außerhalb seines Oeuvres suche ich nach Vorbildern zu seinem Sintflutgemälde und versuche der Frage nachzugehen, welche Werke ihn zu seiner Komposition oder zu einzelnen Motiven und Szenen inspiriert haben könnten.Kapitel 5 widmet sich dem Thema des Manierismus und jener Elemente in Wtewaels Sintflutgemälde, welche als „typisch“ manieristisch zu identifizieren sind. Um tiefer in das Werk Wtewaels und seine Bedeutung einzudringen, ist es notwendig in die geistige Atmosphäre, in der das Gemälde entstanden ist, vorzudringen.Kapitel 6 berichtet über das politische, wirtschaftliche, religiöse sowie das künstlerische Zeitgeschehen. Kapitel 7 widmet sich der Form, dem Inhalt und der Aussage des Gemäldes. Die Grundintention dieser Arbeit war es, eine Fallstudie zum Thema der manieristischen Menschendarstellung zu erarbeiten. Im Verlauf der Recherchen hat sich mir eine weitere Problemstellung aufgedrängt, die es ebenfalls in der Arbeit zu lösen galt, nämlich, wie dieses Gemälde für den heutigen Betrachter inhaltlich sowie formal verständlich zu machen ist. Wie die formale Spezialität der manieristischen Darstellung in diesem Fall zu erklären ist, und was Joachim Wtewael veranlasst hat, sein Sintflutgemälde in dieser Form zu gestalten.
