Doch weltliche Versuchungen lenken ihn von seinem ersten Ziel ab; angezogen vom Glanz der Aristokratie oder von mondänen Sommerfrischen - wie Balbec, einer imaginären Stadt an der normannischen Küste -, wird er erwachsen und entdeckt die Welt, die Liebe und die Existenz der Homosexualität. Krankheit und Krieg, die ihn von der Welt entfernen werden, werden ihm auch die extreme Eitelkeit der weltlichen Versuchungen vor Augen führen und seine Begabung, Schriftsteller zu werden und die verlorene Zeit zu heilen. Es beginnt mit den Gedanken des Erzählers über seine Einschlafschwierigkeiten. Hier findet sich das berühmte Fragment, in dem der Protagonist buchstäblich eine Episode aus seiner Kindheit nacherlebt, während er eine in Tee getauchte und aufgelöste Süßigkeit trinkt. Diese Zeilen sind vielleicht die bekanntesten von Proust und spiegeln Prousts Umgang mit der unwillkürlichen Erinnerung in seinem gesamten Werk wider, das auch die sentimentalen Abenteuer von Charles Swann mit Odette de Crécy erzählt, die Einführung in das Werk und häufig in französischen Schulen behandelt. Der Proust'sche Erzähler erhebt durch die Untersuchung kleinster Details in einem sehr spezifischen Milieu, dem französischen Großbürgertum und der Aristokratie des frühen zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts, den Anspruch, das Universelle erreicht zu haben. Die Philosophie und die Ästhetik von Prousts Werk haben jedoch einen breiten Bezug zu seiner Zeit: Die Philosophie von Henri Bergson, den Impressionismus, die Musik von Claude Debussy und die Dreyfus-Affäre. Es ist bekannt, dass Proust ein schwieriges und distanziertes Verhältnis zu seinem Vater hatte. Dieser ist abwesend, distanziert, die im Leben und in den Ereignissen der Erzählung keine große Rolle spielt. Anstatt eine bestimmte Abfolge von Ereignissen zu erzählen, geht es in diesem Werk nicht um die Erinnerungen des Erzählers, sondern um eine psychologische Reflexion über die Literatur, das Gedächtnis und die Zeit. All diese verstreuten Elemente werden jedoch als miteinander verbunden entdeckt, wenn der Erzähler, der auch der Held des Romans ist, durch all seine negativen und positiven Erfahrungen hindurch zuletzt den Sinn des Lebens in der Kunst und der Literatur entdeckt.
