Anyone working to improve the childbearing experience and help women avoid unnecessary intervention has encountered numerous obstetric myths or old doctors' tales. And while the evidence in the medical literature may be solidly, often unequivocably, against whatever the doctor said, without access to that evidence, the pregnant woman is quite reasonably going to follow her doctor. This book is an attempt to make the medical literature on a variety of key obstetric issues accessible to people who lack the time, expertise, access, or proximity to a medical library to research concerns on their own. This compact, accurate, yet understandable reference is designed for people without medical training and organized for easy access. After an introductory chapter giving basic information about the different types of medical studies, how to evaluate them, and some basic statistical concepts, Goer provides chapters on cesarean issues, pregnancy and labor management, and a review of alternative approaches. Each chapter begins with a stated myth, followed by an examination of the reality. Goer then analyzes the mainstream belief, pointing out its fallacies. Then comes a list of significant points gleaned from the studies and keyed to her abstracts. Next is the outline by which the abstracts are grouped. Finally come the numbered abstracts of relevant articles published, in most cases, after 1980. The book concludes with a glossary of medical terms and an index. This compact, accurate, and understandable reference tool is designed for people without medical training as well as care givers.

Managing grief is a monumental task and requires the bereaved to navigate through a myriad of obstacles that are not the same but unique to each person experiencing grief. The emotional fallout associated with grief is often likened to "the elephant in the room," and few (including the bereaved) want to acknowledge its existence. Fewer still want to openly discuss what the bereaved are experiencing. The bereaved person typically just wants a friend with a willing ear to listen and/or permission to take the needed time to process the loss they are grieving. They don't want someone to pass judgment as to what they're feeling, nor do they want proffered advice as to how better to cope with their grief. They just want to have someone to care or give them a hug and offer a shoulder on which to shed their tears. Well-intended friends will, nevertheless, unknowingly offer irrelevant or hurtful advice, employing the use of cliché's or the many myths that surround what to expect during the grieving process. This book attempts to shine a light on what to expect, what to avoid, and what to ignore. The bereaved person reading it can use it as a resource, therefore, to help mute the painful impact of what they may hear from well-intended friends. For those wanting to help the bereaved, it can be used to as a resource for better understanding the grieving process and how to avoid saying the wrong thing.

This book is a collection of 5 essays on the economic geography of technological knowledge. Their common threads are: (i) the quest for a new paradigm in economic geography, termed ‘systemic’, as an alternative to the neoclassical, based on the epistemological premise of emergence and the theories of evolution and complexity; and (ii) the intent to explain the process of technological knowledge production as a systemic phenomenon occurring in relational space subject to emergence and co-evolutionary dynamics. In this theoretical framework, the author analyses various European knowledge networks, and examines their effects on the production of technological knowledge as sources of relational cognitive capital and economies of complexity. He then poses a number of questions on the direction and instrumentalities of the European research, technological development and innovation policies, and in particular on the issues of cohesion and dynamic efficiency of the European research system.
