Eine Studie zu Paul Celans Verhältnis zu Deutschland - im Jahr seines 100. Geburtstags und 50. Todestags. Paul Celan, 1920 als deutschsprachiger Jude in Czernowitz geboren, wollte schon früh Dichter werden, doch die Ermordung seiner Eltern im Holocaust führte zu einem zwiespältigen Verhältnis zur deutschen Sprache. Trotzdem wird er zu einem der erfolgreichsten deutschsprachigen Lyriker der Nachkriegszeit. Von seinem Wohnort Paris reist er zu Lesungen oder auch privat immer wieder in die Bundesrepublik, aber dieses Deutschland, in dem der Nazismus noch lange virulent ist, bleibt ihm fremd und verstört ihn stets aufs Neue. Freundschaften mit deutschen Autoren (die meisten ehemalige Soldaten der Wehrmacht) scheitern. Die Plagiatsanschuldigung der sogenannten Goll-Affäre nimmt Celan als Rufmord wahr, der für ihn einem nachgeholten Mord gleichkommt. Sein Verhältnis zu Deutschland und seiner Muttersprache, die auch die Sprache der Mörder war, erweist sich als nicht heilbar. Emmerich geht dem schwierigen Verhältnis Paul Celans zur "nahen Fremde Deutschland" auf der Grundlage seines dichterischen Werks und mit Hilfe der zahlreichen, veröffentlichten Briefwechsel des Autors nach. "Der Widerspruch zwischen Muttersprache und Mördersprache, die zugleich seine Dichtersprache war, zwischen Deutschland als einem Ort der Angst und als einem Sehnsuchtsort, sollte sich nie auflösen." This work explores the troubled relationship and unfinished intellectual dialogue between Paul Celan, regarded by many as the most important European poet after 1945, and Martin Heidegger, perhaps the most influential figure in twentieth-century philosophy. It centers on the persistent ambivalence Celan, a Holocaust survivor, felt toward a thinker who respected him and at times promoted his poetry. Celan, although strongly affected by Heidegger's writings, struggled to reconcile his admiration of Heidegger's ideas on literature with his revulsion at the thinker's Nazi past. That Celan and Heidegger communicated with each other over a number of years, and in a controversial encounter, met in 1967, is well known. The full duration, extent, and nature of their exchanges and their impact on Celan's poetics has been less understood, however. In the first systematic analysis of their relationship between 1951 and 1970, James K. Lyon describes how the poet and the philosopher read and responded to each other's work throughout the period. He offers new information about their interactions before, during, and after their famous 1967 meeting at Todtnauberg. He suggests that Celan, who changed his account of that meeting, may have contributed to misreadings of his poem "Todtnauberg." Finally, Lyon discusses their two last meetings after 1967 before the poet's death three years later. Drawing heavily on documentary material—including Celan's reading notes on more than two dozen works by Heidegger, the philosopher's written response to the poet's "Meridian" speech, and references to Heidegger in Celan's letters—Lyon presents a focused perspective on this critical aspect of the poet's intellectual development and provides important insights into his relationship with Heidegger, transforming previous conceptions of it.

Since Germany became a colonial power relatively late, postcolonial theorists and histories of colonialism have thus far paid little attention to it. Uncovering Germany’s colonial legacy and imagination, Susanne Zantop reveals the significance of colonial fantasies—a kind of colonialism without colonies—in the formation of German national identity. Through readings of historical, anthropological, literary, and popular texts, Zantop explores imaginary colonial encounters of "Germans" with "natives" in late-eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century literature, and shows how these colonial fantasies acted as a rehearsal for actual colonial ventures in Africa, South America, and the Pacific. From as early as the sixteenth century, Germans preoccupied themselves with an imaginary drive for colonial conquest and possession that eventually grew into a collective obsession. Zantop illustrates the gendered character of Germany’s colonial imagination through critical readings of popular novels, plays, and travel literature that imagine sexual conquest and surrender in colonial territory—or love and blissful domestic relations between colonizer and colonized. She looks at scientific articles, philosophical essays, and political pamphlets that helped create a racist colonial discourse and demonstrates that from its earliest manifestations, the German colonial imagination contained ideas about a specifically German national identity, different from, if not superior to, most others.
