Previously demonstrated integrated optical phased arrays have primarily been implemented in silicon-based platforms and have therefore been limited to operation at infrared wavelengths, where silicon provides low-loss transmission. Developing integrated optical phased arrays for visible wavelengths would enable the exploration of new applications for this technology, such as autostereoscopic displays and neuronal targeting for optogenetics. The work presented in this thesis involves the development of visible light integrated optical phased array components and systems with a focus on autostereoscopic image projection applications. Practical 3D microdisplay applications will require (1) large-aperture phased array systems for diffraction minimization, (2) integrated phase modulation for implementing dynamically reconfigurable phased array antenna elements, and (3) a phased array system architecture for accurately encoding the light field of virtual objects. Integrated photonic architectures for all three aforementioned goals are investigated in this thesis. With respect to the first goal, a 1x1 mm2 aperture visible light phased array with a near diffraction limited far-field spot size is demonstrated. With respect to the second goal, the design of an integrated phase modulator based on the electro-optic tuning of a nematic liquid crystal waveguide cladding layer is developed and a near-x phase shift is demonstrated in a fabricated device. Finally, an autostereoscopic image projection system comprised of multiple tiled phased arrays configured to project a virtual image with parallax in one dimension within an 8.58° field of view is demonstrated.

An optical phased array formed of a large number of nanophotonic antenna elements can be used to project complex images into the far field. These nanophotonic phased arrays, including the nanophotonic antenna elements and waveguides, can be formed on a single chip of silicon using complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) processes. Directional couplers evanescently couple light from the waveguides to the nanophotonic antenna elements, which emit the light as beams with phases and amplitudes selected so that the emitted beams interfere in the far field to produce the desired pattern. In some cases, each antenna in the phased array may be optically coupled to a corresponding variable delay line, such as a thermo-optically tuned waveguide or a liquid-filled cell, which can be used to vary the phase of the antenna's output (and the resulting far-field interference pattern).

During the last few years, nanomaterials have attracted the attention of the scientific community due to their extraordinary and unique properties. Their small size, and the distinctive features that come with it, makes these materials very attractive for use in different important fields like biomedicine, sensors, or catalysis. One of the most important properties of these materials is their interaction with light and is called surface plasmon resonance. It is a phenomenon that happens on the surface of certain nanomaterials that confers them with unique properties. This remarkable characteristic has opened a whole new field called nanoplasmonics that is acquiring more and more importance among the scientific community. This book aims to review the state of the art in this new field and provide the reader with a wide overview of the new nanomaterials available and their current and future applications.

Photonic Technologies To Enable Slow Light Applications written by Joseph E. Vornehm and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with categories.

"Slow light is light that travels at unusual, extreme group velocities - sometimes as slow as walking speed or slower. Light waves can be described by many velocities, but for a narrow-band pulse of light (a carrier frequency modulated by an envelope), the group velocity is the speed of the pulse envelope. The term slow light also encompasses other exotic group velocities due to similar techniques, including fast light, stopped light, and backwards light. The science of slow light has been established over the past several years, and research attention is now turning to potential applications of slow light. One application of slow light is as an all-optical true-time delay. Two slow light methods in optical fibers, stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) and dispersive delay, are used to provide a controllable pulse delay in a prototype slow-light phased-array laser radar, called SLIDAR. These slow light methods compensate the group delay mismatch of pulses of 6 ns duration while the phased array is steered in two dimensions. A phase control system is described that maintains phase lock among three signal channels and a reference channel, each containing 2:2 km of optical fiber, while accommodating the demands of the slow light techniques. Residual phase error is kept below [pi]/5 radians (1/10 wave) RMS. Slow light can also enhance the spectral sensitivity of spectrometers and interferometers. A design for a slow-light-enhanced nanophotonic spectrometer is presented. One important use of spectrometers is to detect specific chemicals, and I describe an approach to multivariate optical computation, which can be used for automatic chemical spectrum recognition. This technique, which could one day be implemented with a slow-light-enhanced spectrometer as a single-chip chemical detection platform, is explored experimentally in the visible spectrum using a spatial light modulator"--Pages viii-ix.

High Quality Integrated Silicon Nitride Nanophotonic Structures For Visible Light Applications written by Ehsan Shah Hosseini and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Cavity resonators categories.

High quality nanophotonic structures fabricated on silicon nitride substrates and operating in the visible range of the spectrum are investigated. As most biological sensing applications, such as Raman and fluorescence sensing, require visible light pumping and analysis, extending the nanophotonics concepts to the visible range is essential. Traditionally, CMOS compatible processes are used to make compact silicon nanophotonics structures. While the high index contrast of silicon on insulator (SOI) wafers offer a high integration capability, the high absorption loss of silicon renders it unusable in the visible range. In this research high quality factor microdisk and photonic crystal resonators and high resolution arrayed waveguide grating and superprism spectrometers are fabricated and characterized in the visible range and integrated with fluidic structures and their application in biosensing and athermal operations is investigated.
