Bottled Poetry written by James T. Lapsley and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-02-25 with Cooking categories.

California's Napa Valley is one of the world's premier wine regions today, but this has not always been true. James T. Lapsley's entertaining history explains how a collective vision of excellence among winemakers and a keen sense of promotion transformed the region and its wines following the repeal of Prohibition. Focusing on the formative years of Napa's fine winemaking, 1934 to 1967, Lapsley concludes with a chapter on the wine boom of the 1970s, placing it in a social context and explaining the role of Napa vineyards in the beverage's growing popularity. Names familiar to wine drinkers appear throughout these pages—Beaulieu, Beringer, Charles Krug, Christian Brothers, Inglenook, Louis Martini—and the colorful stories behind the names give this book a personal dimension. As strong-willed, competitive winemakers found ways to work cooperatively, both in sharing knowledge and technology and in promoting their region, the result was an unprecedented improvement in wine quality that brought with it a new reputation for the Napa Valley. In The Silverado Squatters, Robert Louis Stevenson refers to wine as "bottled poetry," and although Stevenson's reference was to the elite vineyards of France, his words are appropriate for Napa wines today. Their success, as Lapsley makes clear, is due to much more than the beneficence of sun and soil. Craft, vision, and determination have played a part too, and for that, wine drinkers the world over are grateful. Of the many New World Wine Regions, Napa and Sonoma are probably the most famous, but why? There are many reasons, and they are found in both the stories and the insights that an insider has access to. Considering the location, its popularity seems improbable, because Sonoma and Napa are the northern most points in the Spanish Empire's expansion in the Americas. It was a place that was hard to reach by land, with a coastline that was rocky, and fog bound. When they finally arrived in Sonoma, we're convinced that the Spanish thought to themselves, "We've arrived in Eden, we don't need to go any farther." Sonoma and Napa are located in a special place, that at one time was considered the far ends of the Earth, a place where explorers, adventurers and the foolish went, which made for a very interesting demographic. What is surprising is how different Sonoma and Napa are, located on either side of the Mayacamas Mountains. We often describe Sonoma as the older sister, who is a good-looking girl, a great cook and gardener, always content with her family and friends. Napa is her golden-haired little brother, who is endlessly curious about the outside world, and every time he walks in the room, everybody makes a fuss. It drives Sonoma crazy, but Napa adores his big sister. These stories and insights about Wine Country, covering its origins and culture, were gathered over twenty years, while tour guides, Ralph and Lahni DeAmicis, stood in the back of tasting rooms listening to the hosts talk about the region, while pouring wine for their tour clients. They found that every story had at least three versions, so they melded them together, using as their guide what felt right. They present a wonderfully revealing picture of this remarkable place and the people who have helped make it special. They include the stories of the Chinese Treasure Fleets that explored this coast in the 1400's, the English who arrived in the 1600's and how the Spanish literally fell over the inlet to the San Francisco Bay in the late 1700's. It talks about why the region is so good for growing wine grapes and what's involved in owning a winery. The story of the first settlers in Sonoma, and how the Spanish and the Russians got along is both romantic and remarkable. A look at how the wine industry, and the tasting rooms evolved provides a wonderful context for visitors. The inside story of the famous 'Judgment of Paris' wine tasting that made Napa famous, and all the women behind it, makes great reading. The four versions of how Mount Saint Helena got her name, and the two versions of how the Silverado Trail came to be, are both wonderful stories. On top of these are more stories and insights from two tour guides who have traveled throughout this beautiful region, and have told these tales hundreds of times, over their shoulders, while driving their wine tour guests. The stories surely improved in the telling! They hope you enjoy them.

A compendium for wine lovers: a prominent vintner shares a lifetime of great wines, famous friends, deep knowledge, and insider insights Reflections of a Vintner recounts the lessons learned, relationships forged, and observations made from an insider’s nearly fifty-year journey through the burgeoning wine industry in Napa Valley. From the mid-seventies, when there were less than fifty wineries, to the present, with over eight hundred, Tor Kenward shares his recollections as the region became a world-class wine destination. Following the calendar year, each chapter opens with the challenges and opportunities a winemaker faces that month—in the vineyard, winery, tasting room, and out on the road. In addition to the wine knowledge Kenward imparts, the vintner shares stories of his friendships with legends of the modern American food and wine scene, including Julia Child, André Tchelistcheff, Andy Beckstoffer, and Robert Mondavi, among others. Kenward’s hard work as a vintner was recently acknowledged and celebrated. In the October 2021 Judgment of Napa, held forty-five years after the historic Judgement of Paris, TOR Cabernet was judged to be #1, outscoring legendary Bordeaux châteaux, Napa Valley, and international peers by leading critics and sommeliers. TOR wines, coveted by connoisseurs worldwide, received seven perfect 100-point ratings from leading critics for their 2018 Napa Valley wines. An iconic winemaker, Kenward has written, taught, and lectured on wine most of his adult life. What he is most often asked about are not facts or numbers about his wines, but the stories behind them. These are stories of inspiration and wisdom that shaped his journey. With Kenward’s impressive connection to Napa Valley and his legacy of creating inimitable wines, Reflections of a Vintner offers entertaining insights into an often intimidating and complex but highly enjoyable world.
