In the 1990's, South Africa surprised the world with a peaceful, negotiated transition from armed conflict to an inclusive democracy. This was followed by the ground-breaking Truth and Reconciliation Commission, established to confront and work through a troubled past. Deceptive Fictions: Narrating Trauma and Violence in Contemporary Writing explores the widespread narrative concern with trauma and violence, and their interactions with identity, meaning, ethics, history, memory and various other related issues in a selection of novels by prolific contemporary British and Irish writers. Interrogating the strategic functions of trauma and violence, the book argues that these texts can be read as counter-narratives to, or a backlash against, still-prevalent critical paradigms informed by poststructuralist and postmodern thought. Trauma and violence are invoked as narrative tools to communicate the centrality of the body and of biological and material constraints on human actions. This emphasis on reality and the experiential ties in with the novels’ consistent focus on the individual as an ethical agent and originator of meaning. In so doing, they signal a move in contemporary fiction towards a textual practice that can most fruitfully be approached along the lines of an individualistic, evolutionary, corporeal and experiential narratology, which self-consciously reflects on the manipulative potentials of narrative.

This thesis aims to interpret the traumatic silence of Japanese Canadians in Joy Kogawa's Obasan in the wake of racial internment and persecution during World War II. The thesis focuses on how to break through silence and to deal with one's trauma and the past traumatic memory which is fractured and repressed, and to seek the possibility of narrating trauma. In Chapter One, the focus will be on the traumatic silence. I aim to analyze the causes and effect of silence on each character, including Aya Obasan, Uncle Isamu and Naomi. Chapter Two will focus on traumatic memory. It is necessary to ensure that traumatic memory is known and not altered. Oblivion of trauma may cause tragedy to occur once again. In order to change this circumstance, it is the traumatic survivors who have to make the first step to walk out of silence. In line with Aunt Emily's claim, this chapter aims to explain why traumatic memory has to be revealed rather than remain in silence. Chapter Three will focus on narrating trauma. I aim to interpret why traumatic memory is indelible and what may occur when the past memory is incoherent. Therefore, it is significant that, as Obasan demonstrates, trauma can be narrated without speech, as each character in Obasan presents different methods to narrate their experience. In Conclusion, I will sum up my arguments, emphasizing that the novel, Obasan, itself is an example of progress from silence to narration.

This is due to a disruption of memories, something that Cathy Caruth alludes to in her definition of trauma in Unclaimed Experience: Trauma, Narrative and History by stating that the “response to the event occurs in the often delayed, uncontrolled, repetitive appearance of hallucinations and other intrusive phenomena”. In her definition, Caruth refers to the distorted powers of recollection that very often only allow the traumatised person to access small fragments, if any at all, of the traumatic event. Even though this derangement of memories constitutes a type of psychological defence, and therewith temporarily serves the psyche as a means of protection, it is not conducive to one’s mental health in the longer term. A much more beneficial long-term effect on the psyche of traumatised persons can be achieved through the conscious narration of trauma. In order for the traumatic event not to be triggered arbitrarily, the traumatic event must consciously be placed into the context of one’s own life story. Based on Mary Karr’s novel The Liars’ Club, this term paper not only reveals what it is that initially prevents the author from the sincere coping with trauma, but also analyses how Karr makes use of her post-traumatic experiences in the writing process in order to overcome these. So as to better illustrate the underlying themes of trauma, this paper includes several subsections that will help to gain further insights into the subject matter. Firstly, I would like to introduce the psychological effects of trauma and I hence included a subsection on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder that shall introduce the basic relevance which trauma implicates. Secondly, I included a subsection on the two different pattern of defense of dissociation and repression as these frequently appear throughout the memoir. Following this, I added a section regarding the narration of trauma. A first subsection on the Narrative Exposure Therapy allows the reader to learn about a psychotherapeutic approach which is often used for the treatment of people suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. A second subsection on certain writing strategies encompassing the narration of trauma shall complete the theoretical framework of this paper.
