"Latin American Positivism: Theory and Practice" examines the role of positivism in the intellectual and political life of three major nations: Colombia, Brazil, and M xico. In doing so, the authors first focus on the intellectual linkages and distinctions between Latin American positivists and their European counterparts. Also, they examine the impact of positivist theory on the political cultures of these nations and the more significant impact of the political and socio-economic cultures of those states upon positivist thought. Rather than asserting that the positivist movement was a moving force that reformatted many Latin American modalities, the authors demonstrate that the dynamics of nineteenth- and twentieth-century Latin American societies altered positivism to a greater extent that the positivists altered these nations.

"Por donde se sube al cielo", novela escrita por Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera a fines del siglo XIX, demuestra lo imprecisa que suele ser la frontera entre prosa y poesía. La poesía se define por una convención. Es por medio de su estructura que lectores, escritores y críticos literarios la reconocen. El verso es la forma considerada como la máxima estructura de la poesía; sin embargo, lo poético existe también en diferentes formas literarias. "Por donde se sube al cielo" es el ejemplo de que una novela se puede considerar poesía pues es Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera el poeta que la escribe y además logra que el lenguaje en prosa tenga este carácter poético. "Por donde se sube al cielo" fue incomprendida en el momento de su publicación debido a que utilizaba temas, tópicos y descripciones alejadas del prototipo del mexicano. Por ser parte del movimiento literario modernista, que caracteriza el estilo del autor, todo lo que sucede y los personajes de esta historia son basados en Paíis, sus habitantes y opulencias. La recepción de esta obra hoy en día puede tener una perspectiva diferente porque existe la connotación del contexto en que ésta fue creada y el autor es ya un escritor reconocido e importante para las letras mexicanas.
