Im Mittelpunkt dieser Studie steht die ästhetische Verarbeitung der Spannung zwischen Unsichtbarkeit und Sichtbarkeit, die dem Verhältnis von Juden und den europäischen Mehrheitsgesellschaften in der so genannten Emanzipationszeit des 19. Jahrhunderts zugrunde liegen. Zentral ist dabei die Frage nach der Bedeutung des Wortes „Jude“ in diesen Diskursen. Dabei werden keine kohärenten Identitätsmodelle herausgearbeitet, sondern durch das Aufzeigen von Dissonanzen die Komplexität und die Grenzen unterschiedlicher Modellierungen von Identität untersucht. So lassen sich zum Beispiel Selbstkonstruktionen als „Jude“ und „Europäer“ nicht ohne weiteres nebeneinanderstellen. Traditionslinien lassen sich nur schwer erarbeiten angesichts der Tatsache, dass viele autobiographische Zeugnisse einander widersprechende Diskurse miteinander verbinden. Folglich bilden die untersuchten Texte nicht nur eine Lebenswirklichkeit ab, sondern produzieren die Realität, von der sie sprechen. Jüdische Identität erscheint als diskursiver Entwurf, der ständig neu artikuliert wird.

Doch keine der beiden Gegenwartsbefunde kann erklären, wie aus Deutschland seit dem Zivilisationsbruch eine Einwanderungsgesellschaft geworden ist. Dabei gibt es eine Geschichte zur Einwanderungsgesellschaft – sie wurde nur noch nicht geschrieben. Ihre Spuren findet man in der Literatur, im Film, in Integrationsdebatten, sozialwissenschaftlichen, soziologischen Arbeiten, in Integrationstheorien und auch in juristischen Diskussionen seit Beginn der Migration in die Bundesrepublik. Narrative der Migration bringt genau diese Aspekte, Sedimente und Bereiche in ihrer historischen Folge in einen Zusammenhang und macht die Kulturgeschichte der deutschen Einwanderungsgesellschaft sichtbar. Sie ist geprägt von gestörten Kommunikationen, abgebrochenen politischen Prozessen, von sich wandelnden Begegnungsstrukturen und Praktiken. A fascinating portrait of Jewish life in Suriname from the 17th to 19th centuries Jewish Autonomy in a Slave Society explores the political and social history of the Jews of Suriname, a Dutch colony on the South American mainland just north of Brazil. Suriname was home to the most privileged Jewish community in the Americas where Jews, most of Iberian origin, enjoyed religious liberty, were judged by their own tribunal, could enter any trade, owned plantations and slaves, and even had a say in colonial governance. Aviva Ben-Ur sets the story of Suriname's Jews in the larger context of Atlantic slavery and colonialism and argues that, like other frontier settlements, they achieved and maintained their autonomy through continual negotiation with the colonial government. Drawing on sources in Dutch, English, French, Hebrew, Portuguese, and Spanish, Ben-Ur shows how, from their first permanent settlement in the 1660s to the abolition of their communal autonomy in 1825, Suriname Jews enjoyed virtually the same standing as the ruling white Protestants, with whom they interacted regularly. She also examines the nature of Jewish interactions with enslaved and free people of African descent in the colony. Jews admitted both groups into their community, and Ben-Ur illuminates the ways in which these converts and their descendants experienced Jewishness and autonomy. Lastly, she compares the Jewish settlement with other frontier communities in Suriname, most notably those of Indians and Maroons, to measure the success of their negotiations with the government for communal autonomy. The Jewish experience in Suriname was marked by unparalleled autonomy that nevertheless developed in one of the largest slave colonies in the New World.

Am Beispiel der beiden Essays von José Martí wird dargelegt, wie narrative Formen den Inhalt mit konstruieren. Im Vordergrund steht dabei die Herausarbeitung des Gegenentwurfs zur herrschenden eurozentrischen Perspektive durch die narrative Konstruktion eines genuin lateinamerikanischen Identitätsentwurfs. Martí macht deutlich, dass die Sprache und ihre rhetorischen Mittel einen wesentlichen Beitrag zur Konstruktion von Macht darstellt. Durch die Verwendung einer eigenen, lateinamerikanisch orientierten Sprache, Rhetorik und Ausdrucksweise evoziert Martí einen Gegenentwurf zur eurozentrischen Perspektive und bereitet narrativ die gedankliche Emanzipation Lateinamerikas vom "globalen Norden" vor. Dass er damit seiner Zeit weit voraus ist, zeigen die aktuellen Beziehungen zwischen lateinamerikanischen Ländern und Europa bzw. USA, die noch immer durch Imperialismus geprägt sind. Noch heute ist Lateinamerika weit von einer wirtschaftlichen Unabhängigkeit sowie einer einheitlichen lateinamerikanischen Identität entfernt.

Richard Newhauser examines here aspects of the moral tradition of medieval thought, specifically the construction of the seven deadly sins, their offspring, and related schematizations of immorality in the Latin West. The emphasis in these studies is on the malleability of moral categories, their relationship to changes in medieval culture, and the creativity and sensitivity of the thinkers who made use of the concepts of sinfulness in the Middle Ages. The first section examines the contexts in which the seven deadly sins (or nine accessory sins) are found in medieval Latin, English, and German texts, and in particular the genre of the treatise on vices and virtues as the major vehicle in which concepts of immorality were examined and presented to a variety of audiences for meditative or pastoral purposes. The second section deals with one of the more interesting of the seven deadly sins, avarice, in its penitential, literary, apocalyptic, and institutional contexts, as its definition changed slowly with developing commercial experiences in medieval Europe. In the last section the breadth of the concept of a sinful curiosity is examined, and its historical development is delineated in the thought of Augustine of Hippo and the early Cistercians.

This book is a collection of essays on neglected aspects of the Great War. It begins by asking what exactly was so "Great" about it, before turning to individual studies of various aspects of the war. These fall broadly into two categories. Firstly personal, micro-narratives that deal directly with the experience of war, often derived from contemporary interest in diaries and oral histories. Presenting both a close-up view of the viscerality, and the tedium and powerlessness of personal situations, these same narratives also address the effects of the war on hitherto under-regarded groups such as children and animals. Secondly, the authors look at the impact of the course of the war on theatres, often left out in reflections on the main European combatants and therefore not part of the regular iconography of the trenches in places such as Denmark, Canada, India, the Levant, Greece and East Africa.

Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, einen Beitrag zur Systematisierung der aktuellen erkenntnistheoretischen Diskussion in den Sozialwissenschaften zu leisten, und einer denkbaren Alternative zum traditionellen Wissen(schafts)verständnis schärfere Kontur zu verleihen. Zwar verlieren vertraute Grundannahmen wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis im Zuge des postmodernen Diskurses rapide an Tragfähigkeit, eine konsistent formulierte Alternative, an der sich Wissenschaft orientieren könnte, steht derzeit aber noch nicht zur Verfügung. In dieser Situation ist es nicht ausreichend, traditionelle Wissenschaftstheorie stets nur zu kritisieren, sondern es geht primär darum, Ansätze zu einer Neuorientierung zu formulieren und diskursfähig zu machen.
