Imaginative Narratives is the first of four books in the series Text Types, written by June Keir. The series is designed to help students understand and appreciate the idea that texts differ from one another in terms of their purpose, structural features, language features and the medium in which they appear. The series introduces students to a range of text types and in this way enables them to become confident in identifying a text as a particular type and qualifies them to form expectations about its content, form and objectives. The series also functions to help students begin to write different types of text confidently and incorporate the different features of each text type accurately. The first book in the sereis introduces students to the text type; narrative. It exposes students to a number of engaging stories written by the author and by popluar children's storytellers so that they are able to recognise what a narrative looks like. Carefully contstructed activities which are outcome linked, help students understand how characters, settings and storylines are created so that they can begin to plan and finally write their own narrative. To motivate students to write, the book is clearly divided into sections to highlight the idea that creating a narrative happens in stages. The solutions for the activities are provided at the back of the book. This series is highly recommended for any teacher teaching English in upper or lower secondary school. Includes photocopy masters.

Making Sense Of Narrative Text written by Michael Toolan and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-06-03 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This book takes the following question as its starting point: What are some of the crucial things the reader must do in order to make sense of a literary narrative? The book is a study of the texture of narrative fiction, using stylistics, corpus linguistic principles (especially Hoey’s work on lexical patterning), narratological ideas, and cognitive stylistic work by Werth, Emmott, and others. Michael Toolan explores the textual/grammatical nature of fictional narratives, critically re-examining foundational ideas about the role of lexical patterning in narrative texts, and also engages the cognitive or psychological processes at play in literary reading. The study grows out of the theoretical questions that stylistic analyses of extended fictional texts raise, concerning the nature of narrative comprehension and the reader’s experience in the course of reading narratives, and particularly concerning the role of language in that comprehension and experience. The ideas of situation, repetition and picturing are all central to the book’s argument about how readers process story, and Toolan also considers the ethical and emotional involvement of the reader, developing hypotheses about the text-linguistic characteristics of the most ethically and emotionally involving portions of the stories examined. This book makes an important contribution to the study of narrative text and is in dialogue with recent work in corpus stylistics, cognitive stylistics, and literary text and texture.
