Child soldiers present a challenge to international law and norms--the definition of a child is not universal nor are the opinions about their culpability. I ask how analyzing the narratives of two former child soldiers through narrative analysis and positioning theory and inform our understanding of their culpability and agency. I found that the former child soldiers created storyworlds to normalize their experiences and use linguistic methods of complicating their agency. This ambiguity shows a higher level of agency within a violence system, which goes against binaries embedded in international laws, norms, and understanding.

Within interactive narrative research, agency is commonly focused on the player's autonomy within a game. However agency can be divided into two central components. A player's autonomy, defined as theoretical agency, is the first component. Agency also covers the feeling of satisfaction from seeing the results an action; this is known as perceived agency. Currently, researchers frequently investigate methods for increasing theoretical agency as the primary method of increasing perceived agency. Yet games often employ many techniques that affect perceived agency without affecting theoretical agency. We define such a technique as an Agency Informing Technique (AIT). Our research presents a taxonomy of AITs based on contemporary narrative games and perceived agency related research. This taxonomy allows for better understanding of how game mechanics affect a player's perceived agency over time. We use this taxonomy to investigate a new experimental interactive narrative that shows how AITs can be used when designing a narrative. This experimental game focuses on informing players of possible future outcomes while they are making a decision. We find that our taxonomy of AITs can help explain how players can understand potential future outcomes in an interactive narrative when combined with strong environmental and narrative cues.

This book considers the largely under-recognised contribution that young writers have made to life writing genres such as memoir, letter writing and diaries, as well as their innovative use of independent and social media. The authors argue that these contributions have been historically silenced, subsumed within other literary genres, culturally marginalised or co-opted for political ends. Furthermore, the book considers how life narrative is an important means for youth agency and cultural participation. By engaging in private and public modes of self-representation, young people have contested public discourses around the representation of youth, including media, health and welfare, and legal discourses, and found means for re-engaging and re-appropriating self-images and representations.
