Trata-se de um livro voltado tanto ao público acadêmico quanto aos amantes da capoeira interessados em questões como corporeidade, transmissão da cultura e permanências/mudanças no seio da tradição. Praticante da capoeira angola há muitos anos, a autora passou, no curso de sua pesquisa, pelo aprendizado da capoeira regional. Essa experiência revestiu-se de um caráter duplo: ela não apenas aprendeu um novo estilo de prática, mas também, à luz desse processo, pode re-aprender o estilo (angola) ao qual o corpo já se habituara. O resultado disso é uma reflexão cuidadosa, sensível, sobre os modos de engajamento do corpo em duas vertentes da capoeira até então vistas predominantemente sob a ótica simplista de uma oposição entre a conservação e desvirtuamento da tradição.

In The Ripple Effect: Gender and Race in Brazilian Culture and Literature, Barbosa adopts a comparative, multilayered, and interdisciplinary line of research to examine social values and cultural mores from the first decades of the twentieth century to the present. By analyzing the historical, cultural, religious, and interactive space of Brazil’s national identity, The Ripple Effect surveys expressive cultures and literary manifestations. A reunião objetivou colocar a capoeira entre as lutas internacionais,sendo ela a única nacional, construída no Brasil; essas foram as alegações dos principais protagonistas. Surgiram mestre Zuma, mestre Bimba, mestre Sinhozinho, mestre Pastinha, novas abordagens, novas fontes, novos objetos para um mundo dos capoeiristas que (re)inventavam uma tradição.
