'It is our objective, ' James E. Webb, Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has declared, 'to insure that developments resulting from NASA's scientific and technological programs be retrieved and made available to the maximum extent for the nation's industrial and consumer benefit in the shortest possible time, thus strengthening the bridge between technical research and marketable end use.' On June 2,1964, in accordance with that objective, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the University of California, Los Angeles, jointly sponsored a one-day Symposium and Workshop entitled 'The Transformation of Knowledge and Its Utilization.' This Symposium was the first undertaking of its kind in that geographical region aimed at exploiting the growing reservoir of technology generated by Government-sponsored aerospace research. In order to effect transfer of new knowledge and technology to the non-aerospace economy, engineers, executives, and marketers from potential user industries were invited to learn about these new developments at first hand from qualified representatives of organizations directly engaged in the national space program. This book comprises a well-diversified selection of papers delivered at the Symposium. (KAR) p. 3.

This book puts the reader in the pilot's seat for a "day at the office" unlike any other. The Smell of Kerosene tells the dramatic story of a NASA research pilot who logged over 11,000 flight hours in more than 125 types of aircraft. Donald Mallick gives the reader fascinating first-hand description of his early naval flight training, carrier operations, and his research flying career with NASA. After transferring to the NASA Flight Research Center, Mallick became involved with projects that further pushed the boundaries of aerospace technology. These included the giant delta-winged XB-70 supersonic airplane, the wingless M2-F1 lifting body vehicle, and triple-sonic YF-12 Blackbird. Mallick also test flew the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle and helped develop techniques used in training astronauts to land on the Moon.

In order for the United States to maintain the global leadership and competitiveness in science and technology that are critical to achieving national goals, we must invest in research, encourage innovation, and grow a strong and talented science and technology workforce. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation explores the role of diversity in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce and its value in keeping America innovative and competitive. According to the book, the U.S. labor market is projected to grow faster in science and engineering than in any other sector in the coming years, making minority participation in STEM education at all levels a national priority. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation analyzes the rate of change and the challenges the nation currently faces in developing a strong and diverse workforce. Although minorities are the fastest growing segment of the population, they are underrepresented in the fields of science and engineering. Historically, there has been a strong connection between increasing educational attainment in the United States and the growth in and global leadership of the economy. Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation suggests that the federal government, industry, and post-secondary institutions work collaboratively with K-12 schools and school systems to increase minority access to and demand for post-secondary STEM education and technical training. The book also identifies best practices and offers a comprehensive road map for increasing involvement of underrepresented minorities and improving the quality of their education. It offers recommendations that focus on academic and social support, institutional roles, teacher preparation, affordability and program development.
