There are different views on Nasreddin Hodja's personality, when and where he lived. According to the most common view, he was born in 1208 or 1209 in Hortu village of Sivrihisar, and died at the end of XIII century in Aksehir. His tomb is in Aksehir, Konya. He received his primary education from his father Imam Abdullah Effendi. Later he attended madrasahs in Sivrihisar and Konya. After he completed his education he became an imam instead of his father in the village. Nasreddin Hodja also worked as an assistant judge and madrasah teacher. That's why he was called Nasreddin Hodja. Hodja also learnt Islamic myticism from alim Seyyid Muhammed Hayrani. Details about Hodja's life are shrouded with mystery and hearsay. His high status in the eyes of people contributed to Hodja's becoming a popular myth. According to their stories, he is said to have met Seljukian sultans and Timur, and befriended Mawlana. In fact, Timur and Nasreddin Hodja had lived in different centuries and obviously did not see each other. Within Nasreddin Hodja anecdotes the Timur character is a symbol of the periods' cruel leaders. Nasreddin Hodja was a man who tried to make people leave bad habits and do good deeds. He would use comedy and humour without hurting the feelings of people. He would show the people the right path with his humour. His anecdotes are short and understandable. They would not only make people laugh but make people think. In other words, his anecdotes always had a moral at the end. From his anecdotes one can learn the Anatolian way of life, through humour, sarcasm, a form of criticism and praise.
