Die historische Textsortenforschung ist für das Deutsche ein noch relativ unerschlossenes Feld und so sind bisher nur einige wenige historische Textsorten erfasst und beschrieben. Mit den medizinischen Gutachten nimmt diese Studie eine historische Textsortenklasse in den Blick, die schon im 17. und 18. Jahrhundert von zentraler Bedeutung für die ärztliche Kommunikation war. Ausgangspunkt der Untersuchung sind gängige, gegenwartsbezogene textlinguistische Beschreibungsansätze, die für sprachhistorische Kontexte modifiziert und um wichtige pragmatische Kategorien erweitert werden. Als besonders fruchtbar erweist sich die stärkere Berücksichtigung metakommunikativer Wissensbestände wie sie sich in Rhetoriklehrbüchern, Textsortenanleitungen und Textsortenbenennungen manifestieren. Auf der Basis dieses breit angelegten Analysemodells werden die entsprechenden Textsorten – Consilia, Gerichtsgutachten und Sektionsberichte – kultur- und wissenschaftshistorisch sowie hinsichtlich der für sie typischen sprachlichen Merkmale untersucht und beschrieben. Die Studie bietet damit nicht nur für Sprach- und Medizinhistoriker, sondern auch für Kulturwissenschaftler einen interessanten Einblick in die medizinische Fachkommunikation dieser Zeit.
