This book uses the frame of "nationalist ideologies" to refer to sets of cultural meanings that are often labeled "nationalisms," "subnational identities," and "ethnic nationalisms." The concept of national ideologies encompasses the production of conceptions of peoplehood, emphasizing how ethnicity, racial identity, and nationalism create public identity. This directs the reader to look at the different ways in which people conceive themselves or are conceived of by others and helps the reader investigate the processes by which these ideas develop, alter, and intergrade in real life. Nationalism and globalization are two major contradicting forces in the world today. The roles that these two forces play and the impact of globalization on countries differ. Both Western and Asian "nation-states" have faced the challenge of globalization in recent decades, and the challenge has become more intense since the 1990s. The decline of communism and socialism as ideologies, and the decreasing importance of national boundaries for capital, companies and even labour, have had profound implications for national identity. Thus, the impact of globalization on "nation-states" is not identical. How have "nation-states" coped with globalization? Has it led to stronger nationalism or national disintegration? What has happened to national identity? Is the concept of "nation" still relevant in the era of globalization? To answer these questions, twelve countries -- six from the West (France, UK, USA, Yugoslavia, Australia, and Russia) and six from Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, China, and India) have been selected for study. These countries represent a wide range of national experiences from "old" states to "new" states, from mono-ethnic nations to multi-ethnic ones, and from surviving nation-states to decaying ones. Apart from the individual country studies, the last chapter summarizes and compares the findings of these country studies, throwing light on the various types of nationalism, and the gains and losses of these countries in the process of globalization.

This edited volume contains six chapters, each providing a different perspective on the topic of nationalism, which is the identification with one's own nation and support for its interests. Chapter One deals with the popular notion in India that yoga can solve the climate crisis and examines the validity of this concept. Chapter Two focuses on the nature of national identities and nationalist ideologies in Bangladesh, and attempts to identify potential future changes with specific emphasis on the impact of global media and technological trends, development of political Islam, and South Asian regional politics. Chapter Three takes an original perspective on how Ethiopia's Christian and medieval past was perceived and exploited in the late 19th and early 20th century AD to consolidate monarchical power and to resist encroachments of European colonial powers. Chapter Four examines the complex relations between state and society within the context of South Korea's rapid industrialization. Chapter Five analyzes propaganda and the representations of enemies of Chilean nationalism between 1932 and 1945. Finally, Chapter Six examines the role and the place of Eurasian ideology in the national discourse of Siberia.

Nationalism written by Anthony D. Smith and has been published by Polity this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-01-28 with Political Science categories.

For the last two centuries, nationalism has been a central feature of society and politics. Few ideologies can match its power and resonance and no other symbolic language has such worldwide appeal and resilience. However, nationalism is more than an ideological movement - it is also a form of public culture which draws on much older cultural and symbolic forms. This book provides a concise, accessible introduction to the concept of nationalism. It focuses on competing paradigms and theories of nations and nationalism, and analyses the subject in terms of ideology, theory and history. The approach is broadly comparative and interdisciplinary, with concrete examples and a time-scale stretching from the ancient world to the contemporary global age. The book concludes with an assessment of the prospects of nationalism and of the transcendence of nations and nation states. Anthony Smith's book will appeal to all those interested in this dynamic subject, including students and scholars of anthropology, sociology, history, politics and international relations.
