Of course, the ANC started from a strong base, as the historic standard-bearer of democracy, and as the party of the racially oppressed black majority, of the working class and of the wider poor. [...] It was therefore heartening that in his victory speech President Mbeki spoke of the danger of arrogance, and re-committed the ANC to the service of the nation, and most notably to the interests of the poor. [...] The haemorrhage of potential support for the NNP during the months between the SASAS survey in September 2003 and the election seven months later accounted for the substantial gains of the ANC and DA. [...] In wealthy Afrikaans areas, where support for the NNP averaged between 60 and 70% in 1999, turnout was excellent, with the vote congealing behind the DA: In Welgemoed, the DA won 58.2% to the NNP's 24.15% in a 80.73% poll; in Durbanville, the DA won 57% (NNP: 17%) in the context of 80.7% turnout; in Parow North, the NNP fell from 75% (1999) to 6.23% in a 69% poll where the DA won 68.84% of the vot. [...] Three areas of interest emerged in the elections, which will be examined below: The battle between the UDM and the ANC for King Sabata Dalindyebo/KSD (Umtata); the shift towards the DA and the ID from white and coloured voters in the Western part of the province; and the stability of voting patterns in the one metropolitan area in the province, the NMMM.

The report of the Commonwealth Observer Mission for South Africa’s national and provincial elections held on 7 May 2014. The mission was chaired by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the former foreign minister and attorney-general of Ghana, and was comprised of 3 members in total. These were significant elections as they were the first elections in which ‘born frees’ (those born in or after 1994) could vote and the first to be held since the passing of Nelson Mandela. The Commonwealth Observer Mission found that the elections were credible and the exemplary conduct of all political parties in accepting the outcome of the results bares testimony to the maturity of democracy in South Africa.

Once Canada’s natural governing party but now confined to the opposition benches, it struggles to renew itself – presumably without the support of the provincial-level Liberal parties. Drawing on interviews and personal observations in cross-country ridings, Royce Koop reveals that although the Liberal Party, like other parties, disassociated itself from its provincial cousins to rebuild itself in the mid-twentieth century, grassroots Liberals and other partisans continue to build bridges between the national party and the provinces. This insider’s view of Liberal party politics not only challenges the idea that Canada has two distinct political spheres – the provincial and the national – it suggests that national parties can overcome the challenges of multi-level politics, strengthen their ties to provincial politics, and deepen their legitimacy by tapping the activism, energy, and support of constituency associations and local campaigns.

This book examines and compares the emergence, development and impact of the party systems in post-colonial India and post-apartheid South Africa. It sheds light on the crucial role and function of party systems in democratising developing countries. Although often described as political miracles or empirical anomalies, both countries actually figure prominently in party system and democratic theory due to their regional importance and the important role the party system plays in their political trajectory. The author employs a diachronic comparison of the two party systems, with a distinct focus on the role of party agency in the shaping and maintenance of one-party-dominance and on the role of the two party systems as independent variables. Highlighting the similarities and differences between the two systems, he examines whether the lessons learned from the Indian experience in terms of the function and effects of the country’s post-independent party system and the role of party agency therein are applicable to South Africa.
