Academic Paper from the year 2018 in the subject Communications - Mass Media, grade: 3, Bilgi University İstanbul (Communication), course: Modernization in Turkey, language: English, abstract: This study focuses on the national cinema in Turkey within cultural perspective or similar. It delves further into the perpetual efforts of Halit Refiğ to pave the way for acceptance of a culture-based national cinema, his achievements in persuading his countrymen to embrace culture-based cinema and the challenges he faced during his period as a film director, film critic and theoretician pushing forward for his standpoint in support for the matter. Common to the evolution of other numerous film art industries, the studio system in Turkey has seen a significant transformation, predominantly influenced by filmmakers, film critics, theoreticians and intellectuals. Enthusiastically and painstakingly advocating for a national cinema that embraces the Turkish cultural aesthetics, Halit Refiğ was one of the key players that would ultimately see the Turkish film industry remodel for the good of the future generation. He had to endure the massive and rapidly changing political storm that hit Turkey in the 1960s as well as take into consideration the aspect of cultural diversity apparent from the continuous mixing and merging of different cultures. During his time as a film director, Refiğ together with his team, known for the fight for a National Cinema Movement, faced awful dissent from their opponents, the Turkish Cinematheque Association (Erdogan). Undoubtedly, that was a tough period for Halit Refiğ.

Since 2000, there has been a considerable effort in Turkish cinema to come to terms with the military's intervention in politics and subsequent national trauma. It has resulted in an outpouring of cinematic texts. This book focuses on women and Turkish cinema in the context of gender politics, cultural identity and representation. The central proposition of this book is that enforced depolticisation introduced after the coup is responsible for uniting feminism and film in 1980s Turkey. The feminist movement was able to flourish precisely because it was not perceived as political or politically significant. In a parallel move in the films of the 1980s there was an increased tendency to focus on the individual, on women's issues and lives, in order to avoid the overtly political. Women and Turkish Cinema provides a comprehensive view of cinema's approach to women in a country which straddles European and Middle Eastern cultural conceptions, identities and religious values and will be an invaluable resource for students and scholars of Film Studies, Gender Studies and Middle East Studies, amongst others.

“As new geographies of mobility and hybridity make the concept of national identity highly problematic, new questions emerge that challenge and destabilize our conventional ways of thinking. Where do migrants ‘belong’? Are they members of a distant nation, or natives of the places in which they live? What kind of changes does the sense of ‘Turkishness’ undergo, and what does it mean to various Turkish communities living in various parts of the world? Most important of all, can emergent migrant and transnational cinema prevent nationalism’s abuse of locality and intimacy? In Imaginaries Out of Place: Cinema, Transnationalism and Turkey, the editors put together a series of bold and innovative essays that engage the question of transnational cinema in the context of Turkish national identity. This collection is essential reading for those who are interested in transnational and Turkish cinemas as well as those who research issues of migrant cultures, hybrid identities and new forms of belonging.” – Mahmut Mutman, Professor of Cultural Studies, İstanbul Şehir University

In the mid-1990s Turkish cinema experienced a remarkable revival. However, what is particularly unusual about this revival is the emergence of a new representational form: silent, inaudible characters. Equally unusual is the fact that this new on-screen silence had a gender(ed/ing) aspect, since, for the most part, the mute(d) characters were female. This book focuses on these newly emergent silent female characters in the new cinema of Turkey, and explores the relationship between the ‘new’ female representational form, the ‘new’ cinema of Turkey, and the ‘new’ socio-political climate in Turkey after the September 12, 1980 military coup. It investigates two central questions: what are the functions, formations and operations of these silent female characters, and why did this female representational form emerge specifically in this timeframe? Bearing a cinematic function of instrumentality and exposing, one way or another, a close association between point of view and discursive authority in the films studied, the silent female representational form in the new cinema of Turkey is a cinematic symptom of the on-going struggle over the disrupted orders of gender, nation and national memory due to an increase in thus-far silenced or marginalized voices in Turkey. The silent form not only functions as a cinematic instrument to reveal crises in hegemonic power positions, but also becomes a battleground within a struggle for (re)obtaining a position of discursive authority in the realms of gender, nation and past. The silent form in itself becomes an instrument on the discursive level, which enables a response to Turkey’s crises in these three interconnected realms in the post-1980s.

The volume looks at the relation between contemporary Turkish film and television discourses and religion, in relation to the traditions and rituals of Islam, the representation of Muslim women, and subsequent changes in narratives and characters. It employs differing approaches to the relationships between media and religion, concentrating on how religion has started to shape the politics of film in new cinema practices in Turkey. As such, the book represents a comprehensive resource on recent Turkish cinema and TV – a milestone at a time when numerous disciplines have shown an increasing interest in the emerging new Islamic popular culture. It will appeal to those who are interested in Turkey’s opinion about itself, scholars who work in film studies, media studies, religious studies, gender studies and the political sciences, as well as anyone with an interest in Middle Eastern studies and media.

“A fresh study that confirms the existence of multiple peripheries (and its others) in Turkish society and how dominant centrist media represented these differences in film and television discourse. The use of Mardin’s center-periphery concept for the analyses of films, ads and cartoons is brilliant. This is a timely project as scholarly interest in Turkey has increased exponentially since 2013. This project is key to understanding the roots of a media politics in contemporary Turkey.” —Murat Akser, Ulster University, UK “Alparslan Nas' seminal work disrupts the notion of Turkish identities as fixed and stable. He challenges the center (secular, modern, Western)/ peripheral (conservative, religious) binary by critically examining how a cultural “other” is constructed and performed through the media in Turkey. Nas’ analysis offers a (much needed) new lens and approach to understanding Turkey’s complex social and political landscape.” —Kathleen Cavanaugh, National University of Ireland, Galway, Ireland This book is an important contribution to the scholarship on Turkey’s cultural and political dynamics, facilitating a discussion on the recent depictions of the cultural other in the media. Turkey’s modern history has been characterized by a particular tension between the social classes occupying the “center” of society: while the bureaucratic elite are represented as modern, secular and westernized, the “peripheral” communities are portrayed as conservative, religious or non-Turkish. This book facilitates a timely intervention to problematize this possible perception and to point at the complex dynamics of center-periphery relations through the representation of the cultural other in film, television, advertisements and cartoons, which have all been produced by different social classes. Ultimately, Media Representations of the Cultural Other in Turkey argues that the notions of the center and periphery do not signify stable positions; rather, each social agent imagines themselves at the center, the cultural other at their periphery providing a crucial tool for the realization of their own identity.

Ideology In Turkish Cinema written by Mustafa Mencutekin and has been published by Blue Dome Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-07-16 with History categories.

Mencutekin takes on the role of ideology in the history of Turkish cinema critically analyzing the values and ideas that have shaped the message and stories of Turkish movies. This study is based on the thesis that to truly explore the specific issues currently vexing Turkish cinema, one has to confront the aesthetic, technological, and ideological assumptions in the deeply nationalistic and secular approach to Turkish cinema and how they engage with the real social values of Turkish society. If one hopes to attain a cinema purified from all kinds of crisis, more democracy is required to create a cinema that is at peace with the past, present, and future of Turkish society.
