Mashapaug Pond Dam is an earth embankment dam approximately 290 feet long, 20 feet wide at the crest and 21 feet high at the outlet works. The dike is an earth embankment structure approximately 500 feet long, 15 feet high, and 16 feet wide at the crest. The spillway is located at the southerly end of the pond. It is a concrete structure 60 feet in length and 10 feet high. As a result of the visual inspection and hydraulic and hydrologic computations all three structures are considered to be in POOR condition. To assure the long term performance of these facilities, several items of concern require attention: (1) The extensive seepage observed downstream of the dam and dike, which represents a potential for piping, erosion and embankment instability; (2) Extensive tree growth on the dam and dike, which represents the risk of damage due to tree uprooting and seepage along decaying roots; (3) The erosion at certain areas of the dike crest, the irregularity of the surface, and apparent creep of the downstream slope of the dike, which indicate insufficient stability; (4) The deterioration of the concrete spillway structure, which can eventually result in its failure. The test flood has an inflow of 7,800 cfs and an outflow discharge equal to 6,1000 cfs. This outflow will overtop the dam and dike embankments by 1.5 feet and the spillway abutments by 4.3 feet.

The dam at Acme Pond is an earth embankment structure with a vertical downstream stone masonry wall. It is 12 feet wide at the crest, 570 feet long, and 10 feet high above the roadway which runs along the entire toe of the downstream side of the dam. Its maximum height above the tail race channel to the mill, at the spillway, is 18.7 feet. This channel passes beneath the roadway and the mill, and then exits into a small mill pond about 200 feet downstream of Acme Pond Dam. The stone masonry spillway, located near the right abutment of the dam, is a broad crest weir 16 feet long and 3.2 feet high. The dam is located on Whetstone Brook and is at the outflow point of a 5.2 square mile watershed which contains 5 other reservoirs. Together, these reservoirs provide substantial storage capacity to dampen the effect of major flooding. The storage capacity of Acme Pond at the top of the dam is 29 acre feet. As a result of the visual inspection and hydraulic and hydrologic calculations, the dam is considered to be in FAIR condition. To assure the long term performance of this structure, several items will require further attention. These items concern themselves with the downstream masonry wall, which has tilted and is bulging at many locations, indicating potential future instability; the crest of the dam, which has settled near the left abutment; and the capacity of the spillway and the downstream channel, which are inadequate to pass the test flood outflows, particularly beneath the mill structure. This test flood has an inflow of 1,670 cfs and an outflow discharge of 1,660 cfs, and will overtop the dam by 1 foot.

Park Pond Dam, located at the eastern end of the pond, consists of an earth embankment with a maximum height of 20 feet and a top width which varies from 8 feet to 15 feet. The dam is 420 feet long and has a 19.9 foot concrete spillway at the left end. A diversion channel from an adjacent watershed connects to the spillway approach channel. The impoundment has a maximum storage capacity of 1,100 Acre-Feet. The dike, located at the northwestern end of the pond, consists of an earth embankment with a paved roadway along the crest. The dike has a maximum height of 7 feet, a top width of 21 feet, and a length of about 80 feet. Based on the visual inspection, the dam is judged to be in poor condition and the dike in fair condition. Features which could affect the future integrity of the dam are trees and brush on the embankment; seepage through the embankment; erosion of the downstream slope; deterioration of the spillway approach channel wall and the spillway weir; the accumulation of debris in the spillway and approach and discharge channels; the location of the low level control valve downstream of the dam and lack of erosion protection on the dike. The spillway capacity with water level at the top of the dam and the dike is 310 cfs or 58 percent of the Test Flood routed outflow. The Test Flood would overtop the dam and dike by 0.3 feet.

The dam consists of an embankment at the south end of the pond and two dikes at the northeast end of the pond. The approximately 19.5 foot high dam on Hart Brook is an earth embankment approximately 325 feet in length including, at the left end of the dam, a 37 foot long rounded, broad-crested concrete spillway founded on rock. The two dikes along the northeast edge of the reservoir are referred to in this report as the North Dike and the South Dike. The dikes are about 8 feet and 15 feet high respectively, on the downstream side. The shape of the dikes is very irregular; the crest elevation is not constant, and is, on the average, four feet lower than the crest of the dam. Based upon the visual inspections, the dam appears to be in good condition while the dikes appear to be in poor condition. No evidence of instability was observed in the dam or dikes, however, the height of the dikes is inadequate; the dikes have an irregular configuration and excessively steep slopes; there is extensive tree and brush growth on the dikes and seepage through the dikes and dam. The spillway capacity to the point of overflow of the dikes is 120 cfs which is equivalent to 10% of the routed test flood outflow.

The dam, constructed in 1964 and 1965 to replace an earlier dam which failed in 1963 is an earth embankment approximately 435 feet in length with an emergency spillway at its right end. It is approximately 30.5 feet in height and has a maximum design storage of approximately 235 acre-feet. The principal spillway is a drop inlet structure. The dike, built the same time as the dam is approximately 740 feet in length and 18.5 feet in height. The upstream slope is protected by riprap to approximately 3 feet above the normal pool and grassed to the top of the slope. There is a paved roadway along the top of the dike embankment and the downstream slope is grassed and contains a toe drain. Based upon the visual inspection and past performance, the project, is judged to be in good condition. No evidence of instability of either the dam or dike was observed. Peak inflow to the pond at PMF is 780 cubic feet per second (cfs); peak outflow is 490 cfs with the dam and dike maintaining 3.0 feet of freeboard. The combined spillway capacity to the top of the project is 1142 cfs, which is equivalent to 230% of the routed test flood outflow.

Simpson Pond Dam is a stone masonry and earth embankment structure approximately 300 feet long and 22.3 feet high. The northern third of the downstream face of the dam is stone masonry either vertical or built in steps. The downstream face of the southern two thirds of the dam is earth, with 1:1 slopes and a crest width of approximately 10 feet. The main spillway is located near the northern end of the dam and is 42 feet long. There is also an auxiliary spillway at the northern end of the dam that is 55 feet long and 1 foot higher than the main spillway. There is a service bridge leading to a platform and gate which controls a low-level discharge pipe that passes through the base of the dam. The gate is operable and is used to lower the pond for maintenance purposes. The assessment of the dam is based on a visual inspection and hydraulic/hydrologic computations. The dam is judged to be in FAIR condition with several areas that require attention. These areas include seepage through the dam below and adjacent to the spillway, missing capstones on the spillway weir, vegetation on the earth embankment and in the downstream channel and severe scouring of the northern downstream channel bank below the auxiliary spillway. The spillway capacity at the top of the dam is 885 cfs or 30 percent of the test flood outflow. The test flood outflow will overtop the dam by 1.9 feet.

The maximum height of the dam is 27 feet at the left edge of the spillway. The reservoir storage at the top of dam is 11 acre-feet. There are both upstream and downstream spillway training walls composed of mortared and hand placed cobbles respectively. The visual inspection of Risdon Pond Dam indicated that the dam is in fair condition. The inspection revealed that the unprotected upstream face has been slightly eroded by wave action. The downstream face of the dam has a number of blocks which have been displaced, cracked or have unmortared joints, Grass, moss and small trees are growing out of some of the joints. There are several areas of seepage along the downstream wall both sides of the spillway. There is a 3-foot deep depression on the left downstream wall of the dam. Also, there are five large tree stumps along the crest of the dam and a footpath traverses the crest. The spillway will discharge 220 cfs, or 16% of the test flood with the pool level at the top of the dam. The test flood flow of 1420 cfs will overtop the dam by 2.0 feet.

This dam consists of an earth embankment, and a concrete wall which extends from the embankments to the spillway on each end of the spillway. The earth embankment is 500 feet long, 8 feet wide at the top and 6.7 feet high, with a downstream slope of 2H:1V. The concrete spillway is located at the western end of the dam and is 40 feet long with 15 inch high permanently attached timber flashboards. Based on the visual inspection, and past operational performance, the dam is judged to be in POOR condition. There are large trees growing on the embankment. The concrete wall is severely cracked and spalled and has been exposed on the downstream side by erosion. Seepage is occurring through the wall and all along the downstream toe of the embankment. The test flood for this dam is the 100 year flood. The test flood has an inflow equal to 1810 cfs and an outflow discharge equal to 1800 cfs at a stillwater elevation of 233.1 which will overtop the dam by 1.0 foot. The maximum outflow capacity of the spillway with the water level at the top of the dam is 53 cfs, which is 3 percent of the test flood outflow.
