Between 1947 and 1963, every able-bodied male in Britain turned seventeen was required by Act of Parliament to do two years’ service in one of the Armed Forces (with the inevitable variations and exceptions). In the course of those fifteen years, over two and a half million young men were drafted into uniform of one colour or another. Seventy-five per cent found themselves in the Army. Human nature being what it is, that meant that a sizeable proportion or them formed, or cherished, the ambition to become an officer, to hold the Queen’s Commission. That’s a lot of ambition. The successful ones among them would have to undergo some fairly intensive training before that commission was granted. That meant that, before anything else could happen, the authorities had to make up their minds which aspirants seemed to be the most likely prospects. Put in military terms, how did ‘they’ locate and select their ‘Potential Leaders’? This is an account of what happened to a typical national serviceman who found himself drafted into a ‘Potential Leader’ platoon for his ten weeks’ basic training – in this case in the Army. How did he get there? Why did the Army put him there? And what did they do in the succeeding ten weeks to reassure themselves that they hadn’t made a mistake? It made for an eventful, and at times slightly mysterious ten weeks.

John Izbicki has an exciting story to tell. Berlin-born, he lived through the horrors of Nazi persecution and, on the day after his eighth birthday, he witnessed the Kristallnacht, and the smashing of his parents' shop windows. On the day Germany invaded Poland and Berlin experienced its first wartime blackout, the Izbickis escaped to Holland and from there on to England. The author describes what it feels like to have been a refugee, unable to speak or understand a single word of English, and how he was persuaded by a kind policeman to change his name from Horst to John. He also leads the reader along the remarkable journey he travelled from school to university, the first of his family to enter higher education, and through his adventurous time as a commissioned army officer during two years of national service spent in Egypt and Libya. But the best part of his life was yet to come when this young refugee decided to make journalism his profession. The boy who, not that many years earlier, could speak not a word of English, became the distinguished education correspondent of the country's leading quality newspaper, the Daily Telegraph. After eighteen years in that responsible position, he was sent to Paris to head the Telegraph's office there. When he left the newspaper to join the Committee of Directors of Polytechnics, he played a leading part in transforming the country's polytechnics into its 'new universities'.

Aging Veterans With Disabilities written by Arie Rimmerman and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-10-15 with Political Science categories.

The number of older war veterans receiving disability benefits is steadily growing and is predicted to rise in the next decade. This book provides comprehensive knowledge about health and psychosocial concerns of veterans aging with disabilities and unmet needs and compares policy in three countries that have been involved in massive warfare in the 20th century––the United Kingdom (UK), the United States (US), and Israel. Using a cross-national comparative study of the policies, legislation and services provided by these three countries, which have significant numbers of aging disabled military veterans, this book provides evidence-based knowledge on the trajectories and attendant mental-health and psychosocial problems this sub-group faces when aging with a disability. It sheds light on the paradox in which most veterans with disabilities in the UK, USA and Israel are older, while the current legislation and budget target younger veterans with disabilities. The book reflects the current debate regarding the desired policy toward older veterans with disabilities in these countries and whether to provide them with proactive health services prior to retirement to prevent "accelerated aging". It also evaluates the dilemma of whether to serve aging veterans separately as a unique population or to provide them with the same services used by the general population. This book will be of interest to all academics and students working in disability studies, rehabilitation studies, gerontology, psychology, sociology, social work, social policy, and law more broadly.

Women And The Military written by Ruth Margolies Beitler and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-07 with Social Science categories.

This addition to the Women and Society around the World series explores the roles, challenges, and accomplishments of women in the military in countries across the globe. Around the world, millions of men serve in their countries' militaries, be it on land, on the seas, or in the air. But while many militaries have opened all positions to women, even those on the front lines, others remain closed. Countries have cited a number of reasons for their policies, including changing views of women and the military, conscription, and economic and demographic trends. Written by a professor of comparative politics at the United States Military Academy at West Point and an active duty army major, this book seeks to provide an understanding of women's roles in militaries around the world. The book is organized by region, exploring societal and cultural views of masculinity and war, as well as factors influencing changing views of women and the military, including conscription and economic and demographic trends. Topics also include sexual harassment, recruitment, and views on women's physicality and strength. High school students, undergraduates, and general readers will find this cross-cultural study a fascinating and important resource.
