‘The region’ has been used to understand and propose solutions to phenomena and problems outside the dominant spatial scale of the twentieth century – the nation state. Its influence can be seen in multiple social science disciplines and in public policy across the globe. But how was this knowledge organised and how were its concepts transmuted into public policy? This book charts the development of the academic field of Regional Studies and the application of its concepts in public policy through its learned society, the Regional Studies Association. In their modern form, learned societies often play a complementary role to universities, offering networks that operate in the spaces between and beyond universities, connecting specialised academics and knowledge and making it possible for them to have impact outside the academy. In contrast to the geographically tangible and popularly understood role of the university, contemporary learned societies are nebulous networks that transcend barriers and whose contribution is difficult to discern. However, the production and dissemination of knowledge would be stunted were it not for the learned society connecting scholars through a network of publications and events. This book traces the intellectual history of regional studies and regional science from the 1960s into the 2000s and the impact of the regional concept in public policy through the changing priorities of government in the UK and Europe. By approaching the history through the Regional Studies Association, it interrogates the role and function of the ‘learned society’ model of organisation in contemporary academia and importance as a knowledge exchange vehicle for public policy influence.

Originally formed to harbor freed slaves and Americans returning to Africa, Liberia once was a land of hope. That was shattered by a long Civil War that shook its very foundation. Today's Liberia is glimpsed in this second edition. Building on the first edition, this updated volume focuses on the personalities, from the founders of Liberia, to the soldiers who are responsible simultaneously for destruction and the hope of stability. Along with these people, various social and ethnic groups, political parties and labor movements, economic entities and natural resources are profiled in this updated work. A new chronology of Liberia is included, and a selected bibliography suggests further readings for the scholar.

The East European Economies in the 1970s reviews the development of economic policy in Eastern Europe in the 1970s. This book includes individual country studies that compare and contrast both the aims of economic development and the results of the growth process, as well as the instruments employed in economic policy. More specifically, this book examines what has happened during the past decade after the fundamental changes in economic policy that occurred in the 1960s. This text is comprised of 10 chapters; the first of which provides a background on economic reform in Eastern Europe during the 1970s. Attention then turns to the economic policy, methods, and performance of the USSR after 1970. The chapters that follow focus on the German Democratic Republic, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, and Yugoslavia. This book concludes with a discussion on the economic system of Albania in the 1970s, focusing on the country's conservative radicalism, agriculture, and sharp disputes on economic policy between 1974 and 1976. Throughout the book, the emphasis is on how the ""process of reconstruction within the system"" has led to increasing differentiation of aims, institutions, and instruments of economic policy between individual countries. This book will be of interest to political science students, political scientists, political economists, and policy analysts.

For many years Tanzania was the darling of international aid agencies. During the 1970s it received more assistance per capita than any other nation in the world. And yet, the economy performed dismally: growth was negative, exports collapsed, and poverty increased massively. In the mid 1980s, however, the international community changed tacks and developed an approach based on conditionality and 'program ownership'. Since 1996 the country has grown steadily, and social conditions have improved significantly. This book provides an economic history of Tanzania, since independence in 1961. It covers the policies of African Socialism and the Arusha Declaration, the collapse of the early 1980s, the rocky relationships with the IMF, and the reforms of the 1990s and 2000s.
