English Description: What influence do nationalistic thinking and mutual resentments have on relations between Germans and Poles? In this volume, twelve historians, political scientists and social scientists from German, Poland and the Czech Republic shed light on the links between German and Polish nationalism. They set out from the German Empire's increasingly radical policy towards Poland and the antagonism between Germans and Poles that prevailed around the turn of the 19th/20th century. A lot of space is devoted to the absolute low-point of German-Polish history, which was of course the Nazi occupation of Poland during the 2nd world war, and the subsequent expulsion of Germans from the areas east of the Oder and the Neisse. Contrary to impressions given in the media, there are hardly any resentments between the populations of these two countries today - which is the reassuring conclusion of the volume.

This book contributes to global history by examining the connected histories of German and United States colonial empires from the early nineteenth century to the Nazi era. It looks at multiple and multidirectional flows, transfers, and circulations of ideas, people, and practices as Germany and the US were embedded in, and created by, an interconnected world of empires. This relationship was not exceptional, but emblematic of the diverse entanglements that created colonial globality. Colonial entanglements between Germany and the United States took on many forms, but these shared and intersecting histories have been underanalyzed. Traditionally, Germany and the United States have been understood to have taken, respectively, an authoritarian and liberal path into modernity. But there is no neat dichotomy, as the contributors to this book illustrate. There are many more similarities than have previously been appreciated – and they are the result of multilayered entanglements made visible via conquest, settler societies, racialization, and rule of difference. Building on present historiographies of empires, colonialism, and globalization, this book introduces new analytical possibilities for examining these two relatively understudied empires alongside each other, as well as at their intersections. The First World War did not end in Central Europe in November 1918. The armistices marked the creation of the Second Polish Republic and the first shot of the Central European Civil War which raged from 1918 to 1921. The fallen German, Russian, and Austrian Empires left in their wake lands with peoples of mixed nationalities and ethnicities. These lands soon became battle grounds and the ethno-political violence that ensued forced those living within them to decide on their national identity.
