From the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century, Liverpool was frequently referred to as the 'second city of the empire'. Yet, the role of Liverpool within the British imperial system and the impact on the city of its colonial connections remain underplayed in recent writing on both Liverpool and the empire. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe introduced the concept of Weltliteratur in 1827 to describe the growing availability of texts from other nations. Although the term "World Literature" is widely used today, there is little agreement on what it means and even less awareness of its evolution. In this wide-ranging work, John Pizer traces the concept of Weltliteratur in Germany beginning with Goethe and continuing through Heinrich Heine, Karl Marx, and Friedrich Engels to the present as he explores its importation into the United States in the 1830s and the teaching of World Literature in U.S. classrooms since the early twentieth century. Pizer demonstrates the concept's ongoing viability through an in-depth reading of the contemporary Syrian-German transnational novelist Rafik Schami. He also provides a clear methodology for World Literature courses in the twenty-first century. Pizer argues persuasively that Weltliteratur can provide cohesion to the study of World Literature today. In his view, traditional "World Lit" classes are limited by their focus on the universal elements of literature. A course based on Weltliteratur, however, promotes a more thorough understanding of literature as a dialectic between the universal and the particular. In a practical guide to teaching World Literature by employing Goethe's paradigm, he explains how to help students navigate between the extremes of homogenization on the one hand and exoticism on the other, learning both what cultures share and what distinguishes them. Der erste Teil des Buches unter dem Titel "Goethe und China" handelt von Goethes Beschaftigung mit der chinesischen Kultur und Literatur. Das Hauptthema dieser Arbeit bildet ein Vergleich zwischen Goethes Werk "Die Wahlverwandtschaften" und dem klassischen chinesischen Roman "Der Traum der Roten Kammer" (Hongloumeng) von Cao Xueqin und Gao E. Diese Romane schildern hauptsachlich die Liebesgeschichte zweier Paare. In Goethes Werk sind es Eduard und Ottilie, im chinesischen Roman Baoyu und Daiyu. Aus verschiedenen Grunden scheitert ihre Beziehung. Sie erleiden ein vergleichbares, tragisches Schicksal, wenn auch in einer ganz anderen Welt. Diese Arbeit analysiert und vergleicht die Charaktere der vier Hauptfiguren und legt ihre Ahnlichkeiten und Unterschiede dar. Der Roman "Der Traum der Roten Kammer" ist ein Werk der Weltliteratur. Er wird als die bedeutendste Erzahlung in der chinesischen Literaturgeschichte seit uber einhundert Jahren erforscht. In dieser Forschungstradition ist die sogenannte Hong-Schule (Hongxue) entstanden. Um sich dem Roman zu nahern, versucht diese Arbeit einen Uberblick uber die fruhe Periode der Qing-Dynastie (1644-1911) und uber die wissenschaftliche Arbeit der "Hong-Schule" zu geben. Vergleichbar sind beide Romane auch hinsichtlich der Erzahlkunst. Ihre Verfasser, Goethe wie Cao Xueqin, gelangen im Verlauf ihrer Erzahlung sehr bald zum Hauptmotiv ihres Romans und deuten bereits fruh das Schicksal der jeweiligen Hauptfiguren an. Dafur verwendete Goethe in der "chemischen Gleichnisrede" des 4. Kapitels den chemischen Begriff der "Wahlverwandtschaften", der von der naturwissenschaftlichen Entwicklung seiner Zeit beeinflusst war. Bei Cao Xueqin ist es die Traumbeschreibung im 5. Kapitel, die als ein traditionelles Erzahlmittel in den klassischen chinesischen Romanen haufig angetroffen wird. Mit der literarischen Darstellung wie auch der eigentumlichen Erzahlweise beider Werke befasst sich die Autorin Tong Yao in ihrer Arbeit ausfuhrlich. vspace{1ex Diese Arbeit bereichert die bislang wenig umfangreiche Sekundarliteratur uber den Roman "Der Traum der Roten Kammer" im deutschsprachigen Raum. Die meisten Zitate aus den literarischen Texten des chinesischen Originals wurden von der Autorin in das Deutsche ubersetzt. Diese textnahen und zugleich poetische Ubertragungen stehen zum ersten Mal dem Leser in deutscher Sprache zur Verfugung.
