The database "National Socialism, Holocaust, Resistance and Exile 1933-1945" opens the series "20th Century German History Online". For this database fundamental primary sources on the National Socialist state and the NSDAP, Nazi ideology and propaganda, National Socialist justice and legislation, on resistance and persecution, and annihilation and expulsion in the "Third Reich" have been compiled and digitised. The approximately 40,000 primary sources with about 450,000 pages include: administration files and correspondence from the highest authorities of the "Third Reich", especially from the party chancellery of the NSDAP, situation and status reports of the secret state police authorities (Geheime Staatspolizei, SD-Sicherheitsdienst of the SS and Reichssicherheitshauptamt) from the Reich and the annexed and occupied territories, Adolf Hitler's speeches, writings and orders from 1925 to 1945, the diaries of Joseph Goebbels from 1923 to 1945, indictments and judgements of the Nazi People's Court (Volksgerichtshof) and the Higher Regional Courts of Vienna and Graz, in which thousands of cases of high treason against opponents of the regime were heard, some of them sensational, programmatic writings, speeches, political testaments, camouflaged writings and leaflets by opponents of the regime and emigrants, expatriation and deportation lists, the previously unpublished card index on the Nuremberg war crimes trials, which indexes some 30,000 documents of evidence from the prosecution. Beyond the primary source editions, the database offers the user: 18,000 biographical articles on perpetrators and victims of the "Third Reich" Overviews of the structure and organization of the National Socialist authorities Commonly used abbreviations of the period Inventories of archival file holdings and estates Scholarly introductions to the sources and essays on key themes The database Basis of the database are primary source editions published by K. G. Saur Verlag on microfiche or in print, licensed source works from other publishers and previously unpublished material. Many of the publications were originally compiled and edited in cooperation with distinguished institutions such as the Institute of Contemporary History (Institut fÃ1⁄4r Zeitgeschichte MÃ1⁄4nchen-Berlin), the German Federal Archives (Bundesarchiv) or the German Exile Archive (Deutsches Exilarchiv 1933-1945). The different primary sources in the database can now be searched in full-text using a variety of search possibilities. Besides it is also possible to search within individual documents such as "Stimmungs- und Lageberichte" (situation and status reports), "AusbÃ1⁄4rgerungs- und Deportationslisten" (expatriation and deportation lists), "Justizakten" (judicial records) or "Reden und Aufzeichnungen" (speeches and memoranda), as well as within selected publications or specific periods of time. The sources are integrated into a background of useful supplementary information such as introductions to the respective source holdings, indexes of abbreviations, statistics and literature for further reading. Links to this additional information are available at the end of each digitised source. The biographical material can be accessed independently, and contains a wealth of information about the people named in the sources. Finally, relevant contemporary reference works in digitised form are at the users disposal, covering the offices, organisation and administration of the National Socialist state. An additional aid is provided by inventories of archival holdings, in which the estates of emigrants, resistance organisations as well as files of National Socialist authorities are described. The variety and relevance of the content of the digitalised sources, the unique extent to which the documents are indexed, and the huge amount of biographical material make the database a unique research instrument and one which points modern source research in new directions.

Quantifying Resistance written by Wayne Geerling and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-11 with Business & Economics categories.

This book presents and uses a major, new database of the most serious forms of internal resistance to the Nazi state to study empirically the whole phenomenon of resistance to an authoritarian regime. By studying serious political resistance from a quantitative historical perspective, the book opens up a new avenue of research for economic history. The database underpinning the book was painstakingly compiled from official state records of treason and/or high treason tried before the German People’s Court (Volksgerichtshof) between 1933 and 1945. It brings together material on resistance groups stored in the archives of the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria with previously inaccessible files from the former German Democratic Republic, Czechoslovakia and Soviet Union. Through searching these records, the authors have been able to reconstruct in hitherto unattainable detail the economic, social, political, ethnic and familial profiles, backgroun ds, and influences of all 4,378 civilians of the Third Reich active in Germany, Austria and the outside territories for whom there are complete records. The findings of their research afford fresh, new interdisciplinary insights and perspectives, not only on the configuration, timing, impact and profile of resistance to the Nazi state, but also on a range of real-world behaviours common within authoritarian states, such as defection, reward and punishment, and commitment to group identities. The book’s statistical analysis reveals precisely the who, how, where and when of serious resistance. In so doing, it advances significantly our understanding of the overall pattern and nature of serious resistance within Nazi Germany.

Terror Flyers written by Kevin T Hall and has been published by Indiana University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-01-19 with History categories.

Terror Flyers examines the "lynch justice" (Lynchjustiz) committed against American airmen in Nazi Germany during World War II. Using engaging first-person accounts of downed pilots, as well as previously unused primary sources, Terror Flyers challenges the notion that such lynchings were exclusively the domain of Nazi party officials and soldiers. New evidence reveals ordinary German people executed Lynchjustiz as well. Initially occurring as a spontaneous reaction to the devastation of the Allied air campaign against the cities of the Third Reich, Lynchjustiz offered the Nazi regime a unique propaganda opportunity to harness the outrage of the German population. Fueled by inspiration from America's own history of the lynching of African Americans, Nazi propaganda exploited the very same imagery found in US publications to escalate the anger of the German people. Drawing heavily on the accounts of the downed airmen themselves, testimonies from the "flyer trials" held in Dachau during 1945–48, and rarely seen Nazi propaganda, Terror Flyers offers a new narrative of this previously overlooked aspect of the Allied campaign in Europe and suggests that at least 3,000 cases of lynch justice likely occurred between 1943 and 1945.

This groundbreaking book explores the interpretative potential and analytical capacity of the concept ‘fascist warfare’. Was there a specific type of war waged by fascist states? The concept encompasses not only the practice of violence at the front, but also war culture, the relationship between war and the fascist project, and the construction of the national community. Starting with the legacy of the First World War and using a transnational approach, this collection presents case studies of fascist regimes at war, spanning Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Francoist Spain, Croatia, and Imperial Japan. Themes include the idea of rapid warfare as a symbol of fascism, total war, the role of modern technology, the transfer of war cultures between regimes, anti-partisan warfare as a key feature, and the contingent nature and limits of fascist warfare.

Political Exile And Exile Politics In Britain After 1933 written by and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011-01-01 with History categories.

Political Exile and Exile Politics in Britain after 1933 brings together a number of scholarly essays that shed light on a hitherto neglected aspect of the experience of German and Austrian refugees in Britain – their political activities in their country of refuge and how these were viewed (and used) by the British government and its Secret Service. This volume does not claim to be exhaustive. However, it offers a range of case studies on various issues concerning political exile and the possibility of the continuation of political engagement in exile, even in the internment camps. Most of the contributions in this volume are based on archival material that has never been used before possibly because, like the MI5 files on Karl Otten which have only recently been declassified, researchers have not been able to access them. Predictably, the majority of these essays show the political activities of men. The efforts of women which constitute the focus of three contributions therefore are all the more noteworthy.
