This study examines the role that NATO and the United States play in the security policies of Finland, Norway, and Sweden, and Russia's views on the activities of the Alliance and the United States along its northern flank. An analysis of the foreign and security policies of Finland, Norway, and Sweden indicates that these three countries view Russian activities in the region as a security threat. The study finds that NATO and the United States play a large role in the security calculations of Finland, Norway, and Sweden, while Russia considers the Alliance and the United States as threats to its national security. The study encompasses economic and political consideration; the historical context between Russia and Finland, Norway, and Sweden; and the current security policies of all four countries. It also analyzes NATO considerations, bilateral relations, and potential regional security implications. This study recommends that Norway continue to seek an increase in NATO activity in the region, while Finland and Sweden should seek NATO membership unless they are willing to combat potential Russian aggression alone. FINAL REFLECTIONS Chapter II gives a brief synopsis of some of the important aspects of the economic and political ties between Russia and Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Chapter III examines briefly the historical context of all four countries. This chapter will begin by examining the security relations of Finland, Norway, and Sweden with Russia. Each country has taken a different path, and that path helps explain how each country views its current security relations with Russia. The chapter will end with an examination of Russia's history. Outsiders have invaded Russia numerous times; this may help to explain Russia's negative approach to NATO enlargement. This chapter reviews Russia's acts of aggression in the 21st century as well as what lessons NATO nations and Finland and Sweden have taken from Russia's aggression in Ukraine. Chapter IV examines how Finland, Norway, and Sweden plan to modernize their military capabilities. This chapter will cover the role that NATO and bilateral relations play in the security policies of Finland, Norway, and Sweden, as well as the individual security concerns of each country. Chapter V considers the Russian perspective on the military and security activities of Finland, Norway, and Sweden and Russia's strategic goals and outlook concerning the Arctic. This chapter also includes a section on Russia's military modernization. Putin has used the military and threats of violence many times; understanding how Putin is modernizing Russia's military will help one understand the concerns of Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

Nato S Enlargement And Russia written by Oxana Schmies and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-04-30 with Political Science categories.

The Kremlin has sought to establish an exclusive Russian sphere of influence in the nations lying between Russia and the EU, from Georgia in 2008 to Ukraine in 2014 and Belarus in 2020. It has extended its control by means of military intervention, territorial annexation, economic pressure and covert activities. Moscow seeks to justify this behavior by referring to an alleged threat from NATO and the Alliance’s eastward enlargement. In the rhetoric of the Kremlin, NATO expansion is the main source for Moscow’s stand-off with the West. This collection of essays and analyses by prominent politicians, diplomats, and scholars from the US, Russia, and Europe provides personal perspectives on the sources of the Russian-Western estrangement. They draw on historical experience, including the Russian-Western controversies that intensified with NATO's eastward expansion in the 1990s, and reflect on possible perspectives of reconcilitation within the renewed transatlantic relationship. The volume touches upon alleged and real security guarantees for the countries of Eastern and Central Europe as well as past and current deficits in the Western strategy for dealing with an increasingly hostile Russia. Thus, it contributes to the ongoing Western debate on which policies towards Russia can help to overcome the deep current divisions and to best meet Europe’s future challenges.

Beyond Nato written by Michael E. O'Hanlon and has been published by Brookings Institution Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-08-15 with Political Science categories.

In this new Brookings Marshall Paper, Michael O'Hanlon argues that now is the time for Western nations to negotiate a new security architecture for neutral countries in eastern Europe to stabilize the region and reduce the risks of war with Russia. He believes NATO expansion has gone far enough. The core concept of this new security architecture would be one of permanent neutrality. The countries in question collectively make a broken-up arc, from Europe's far north to its south: Finland and Sweden; Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus; Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan; and finally Cyprus plus Serbia, as well as possibly several other Balkan states. Discussion on the new framework should begin within NATO, followed by deliberation with the neutral countries themselves, and then formal negotiations with Russia. The new security architecture would require that Russia, like NATO, commit to help uphold the security of Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, and other states in the region. Russia would have to withdraw its troops from those countries in a verifiable manner; after that, corresponding sanctions on Russia would be lifted. The neutral countries would retain their rights to participate in multilateral security operations on a scale comparable to what has been the case in the past, including even those operations that might be led by NATO. They could think of and describe themselves as Western states (or anything else, for that matter). If the European Union and they so wished in the future, they could join the EU. They would have complete sovereignty and self-determination in every sense of the word. But NATO would decide not to invite them into the alliance as members. Ideally, these nations would endorse and promote this concept themselves as a more practical way to ensure their security than the current situation or any other plausible alternative.

Capitalist Russia And The West written by Jeffrey Surovell and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-01-18 with Political Science categories.

This title was first published in 2000: highly innovative work which challenges mainstream approaches to the study of Russian policy with its groundbreaking application of Marxism and dependency theories. Using class analysis, it examines, in a meticulously documented study, what is perhaps the most important issue in world politics today: Russia and the West. Unconventional yet powerful, it nevertheless comes up with highly persuasive conclusions. Whether one agrees with its challenging conclusions or not, they cannot be ignored.
