Den 1. september 2012 bliver en særdeles minderig dag for tre modne mænd, der af specielle grunde er viklet ind i et skæbnefællesskab af mystik til forundring for deres omgivelser. Deres livslinjer krydsedes første gang i januar samme år. Det skete i et kloster dybt inde i Ardennerne. Her blev det klart for dem i fortrolighedens dunkle spotlight, at de alle tre bar på en livslang hemmelighed, hvis indhold kun opleves og gennemleves af meget få mennesker. Michael Schmidt, den 62-årige danske rentier og tidligere natklubejer, oplever et helt uventet besøg af et ungt par i sin penthouselejlighed i Nice. Parret er velkendt for ham af ret forskellige grunde og besøget danner skygger tilbage til en fortid i såvel Danmark som DDR. Det yngre par har et meget specielt ønske. Næsten samtidig kan den franske tidligere fremmedlegionær Frank Karon med sine jødisk-marokkanske aner fejre sin 60 års fødselsdag på en bar i centrum af Marseille omgivet af ni nøje udvalgte gæster. Dette fødselsdagsselskab danner mange spor af minder mellem de 10 deltagere og ikke mindst deres individuelle liv siden de unge dage i Fremmedlegionen. Denne første lørdag i september er også speciel for den 70-årige eks-overlæge i psykiatri Augustus Jahn. Han er inviteret til en 40-års fødselsdag i centrum af den lettiske hovedstad Riga. Samværet med de øvrige gæster og festens hovedperson genererer talrige minder om en fortid i det tidligere kommunistiske Østeuropa. Et liv, der er meget forskellig for hans nuværende pensionistliv i den franske Middelhavsby Menton, hvor hans livslange passion for malerkunst bliver udlevet.
