Der Autor fragt nach den Fortschritten in der Darbietung von Ergebnissen. Er konstatiert eine Dichotomie zwischen Theorie und Empirie wirtschaftswissenschaftlicher Forschungsarbeit. Forschung, so sein Fazit, ist unabdingbar für weiter zu leistende Arbeiten. Der Zukunftsanspruch von Forschung begründet sich aber auch in dem Stellenwert, den die Prognose für die Planung wirtschaftlicher Aktivitäten und für die Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftspolitik hat. Einen anderen Schwerpunkt bildet das Entstehen von wirtschaftlichem Wachstum. Hauptvoraussetzung hierfür sind technischer Fortschritt und Innovation. Strukturveränderungen treiben das Wachstum voran. Diese werden immer wieder von Innovationen verursacht. Innovation, das ist Aufnahme und Umsetzung von neuen Kundenwünschen und neuen Technologien durch Unternehmen, die unter Konkurrenzbedingungen arbeiten. Oppenländer registriert die wachsende Bedeutung von Umweltschutzpolitik. Er mahnt nachhaltige Entwicklung an, fordert den Dreiklang von Ökonomie, Ökologie und gerechter Einkommens- und Vermögensverteilung. Analysegegenstand ist auch die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Unternehmen auf dem Weltmarkt. Können Integrationsbestrebungen zwischen Nationen neue Rahmenbedingungen schaffen, die das Auseinanderdriften von privaten Vorteilen und staatlicher Hilfestellung und Vorsorge eindämmen?
