Was soll ein weiteres Buch zur Naturschutzproblematik und zu Flussrenaturierungen? Immer weniger Leute kaufen ja Bücher, und der Aufwand steht in keinem Verhältnis zum Ertrag. Sofern denn ein solcher überhaupt ausgewiesen werden kann. Beim Schreiben früherer Bücher habe ich gemerkt, dass man selber beim Schreiben und Beobachten viel lernt und herausfindet. Dies allein ist also ein Grund Bücher zu machen. Wie sieht es nun aber mit den Millionen von Franken an Steuergeldern aus, die für die Renaturierungsarbeiten an der Aare zwischen Olten und Aarau ausgegeben wurden? Brachten die Programme etwas für die Flora und Fauna oder waren es blosse Arbeitsbeschaffungsprogramme? Oder gar Alibiübungen? Während eines Jahres, von Oktober 2019 bis September 2020, habe ich die Schachengebiete an der Aare zwischen Aarau und Olten (Kantone Solothurn und Aargau / Schweiz) regelmässig besucht. In diesem Tagebuch habe ich das Entdeckte beschrieben und wo immer möglich auch fotografisch festgehalten. Die Bilder wurden, wenn nicht besonders vermerkt, im besprochenen Monat vor Ort von mir gemacht.

Von einem ihrer vielen Spaziergänge mit unseren Hunden im Wald zurückkommend, fragt mich meine Frau: «Was ist im Wald los, überall wird geholzt, ist das nachhaltig?». Meine Erfahrungen bei Waldläufen und Hundespaziergängen zeigen ebenso eine verstärkte Aktivität der Forstwirtschaft. Um der Sache auf den Grund zu gehen, beschloss ich, dieses Buch zu schreiben. Ich habe das Niederamt in die drei Regionen: Jura, Aaretal und Mittelland unterteilt. Während eines Jahres habe ich einige ausgewählte Waldparzellen mehrmals besucht und das Vorgefundene auch bildlich festgehalten. Einleitend sind die Grundlagen der Geographie und Geschichte des Niederamtes dargestellt. Der Kampf um den Erhalt des Waldes ist Jahrhunderte alt. Die erste Holzverordnung im Kanton Solothurn stammt aus dem Jahr 1751.

Zum Verschwinden der Insekten fehlen leider noch für die meisten Arten ausgewiesene Statistiken. Dass die Insekten im Rückgang sind, ist mir bei der Arbeit an früheren Büchern aufgefallen. Dieses Buch ist nicht eine wissenschaftliche Untersuchung zum Insektensterben. Das Buch beschreibt die noch vorhandene Artenvielfalt im Niederamt. Während zwei bis drei Jahren habe ich alle Insektenarten fotografiert und beschrieben, die ich im Niederamt entdeckt habe. Alle Aufnahmen, wurden von mir während dieser Zeit, hier im Niederamt gemacht. Jeder kann mithelfen, die Insektenarten zu schützen. Schon die Anpflanzung von einheimischen Pflanzen ist eine grosse Hilfe für die Tiere.
