Excerpt from Nature and Man Lecture It is a pleasure to me, at this moment, to call to mind my friendship with the gifted man who founded this lectureship, and to join my tribute with that of so many others, to his high qualities. The know ledge of Nature lost a true and eager searcher when his labours ceased. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Place of Mind in Nature and Intuition in Man: A Lecture That the universe we see around us was not always there, is so little disputed, that every philosophy and every faith undertakes to tell how it came to be. They all assume, as the theatre of their problem, the field of space where all objects lie, and the track of time where events have reached the Now. But into these they carry, to aid them in representing the origin of things, such interpreting conceptions as may be most familiar to the knowledge or fancy of their age: first, the flat of Almighty We'll, which bade the void be filled, so that the light kindled, and the waters swayed, and the earth stood fast beneath the vault of sky; next, when the sway of poetry and force had yielded to the inventive arts, the idea of a contrim'ng and adapting power, building and balancing the worlds to go smoothly and keep ti me together, and stocking them with self-moving and sensitive machines; and now, since physiology has got to the front, the analogy of the seed or germ. Excerpt from Representative Men: Nature, Addresses and Lectures The race goes with us on their credit. The knowledge that in the city is a man who invented the railroad, raises the credit of all the citizens. But enormous populations, if they be beggars, are disgusting, like moving cheese, like hills of ants or of fleas, - the more, the worse. Excerpt from Lectures on Physiology, Zoology, and the Natural History of Man: Delivered at the Royal College of Surgeons I willingly concede to every man what I claim for myself, the freest range of thought and expression; and am perfectly indifferent whether the sentiments of others on speculative sub jeeta coincide with or differ from my own. Instead of wishing or expecting that uniformity of opinion should be established, 1 arn convinced that it is neither practicable nor desirable that varieties of thought are as numerous, and as strongly marked, and as irreducible to one standard, as those of bodily form and that to quarrel with one, who thinks differently from ourselves, would be no less unreasonable than to be angry with him for having features unlike our own. Excerpt from Man's Place in Nature, and Other Anthropological Essays I AM very well aware that the old are prone to regard their early performances with much more interest than their co'n temporaries of a younger generation are likely to take in them; moreover, I freely admit that my younger contemporaries might employ their time better than in perusing the three essays, writ ten thirty-two years ago, which occupy the first place in this volume. This confession is the more needful, inasmuch as all the premises of the argument set forth in Man's Place in Nature and most of the conclusions deduced from them, are now to be met with among other well-established and, indeed, elementary truths, in the text-books. Paradoxical as the statement may seem, however, it is just because every well-informed student of biology ought to be tempted to throw these essays, and especially the second, On the Relations of Man to the Lower Animals, aside, as a fair mathematician might dispense with the reperusal of Cocker's arithmetic, that I think it worth while to reprint them; and entertain the hope that the story of their origin and early fate may not be devoid of a certain antiquarian interest, even if it possess no other. Excerpt from From Nature to Man The title does not mean that man is not natural, or not within the realm of the generous mother. It is chosen for a few studies of nature and life given in a rather informal manner as lectures, some of which are narrative. The mountain, which is the subject of the first, was visited in the summer of 1905, and the lecture delivered that fall on a Sunday evening was orig inally a letter written just after the moun tain experience to the wife who was in the West, the beginning and ending only re-adapted, and is here slightly revised. The three which follow were in the autumn of 1907 the others, as a short series of general lessons, in 1908, and were among the last words of a pastorate with the people of Barre. Excerpt from The Natural History of Man: A Course of Elementary Lectures It is proper to remark, however, that these differences of Opinion are of minor importance in relation to the objects of this book. It has been translated, because it is the most admi rable popular introduction to the study of the races of mankind that has yet appeared; and, in the work of translation, the author's style of exposition has been followed as literally as possible.
