Bernard Cornwell se narodil 23. února 1944 v Londýně, vyrůstal v Essexu a nyní žije většinou ve Spojených státech amerických. Vystudoval Londýnskou univerzitu a poté sedm let pracoval v televizi BBC. Čtenáře upoutal svými thrillery ze současnosti a proslavil se historickými romány, většinou již přeloženými do češtiny. Zachycuje v nich významné okamžiky anglických a amerických dějin od záhadami obestřené stavby kamenného kruhu ve Stonehenge (Svatyně) přes legendární příběhy osobitě pojatého artušovského cyklu (Kronika válečníkova) a počátky stoleté války (Hledání svatého grálu), cyklus z napoleonských válek, jež rámují osudy Richarda Sharpa, tetralogii z americké občanské války (Kronika Nathaniela Starbucka) až po ságu z raně středověké Anglie, v níž líčí dobu po vítězství krále Alfreda, později zvaného Veliký, a do které patří v nakladatelství BB/art vydané knihy Poslední království, Bledý jezdec, Páni severu, Píseň meče, Hořící země, Smrt králů, Pohanský pán, Prázdný trůn, Válečníci bouře a Plamenonosič. Cornwellovy knižní série se také dočkaly televizního zpracování – ITV natočila řadu filmů o Sharpovi se Seanem Beanem v hlavní roli a BBC seriál Poslední království.
