More than 17,000 Catholic priests and seminarians were conscripted into the German armed forces during World War II. 500 of them served as chaplains, the rest as medical orderlies; the latter were officially forbidden to administer to others as priests. However, many of them defied this policy because they felt morally impelled to provide emotional and spiritual support for their fellow (Catholic, German) soldiers. These men embraced two integral elements of their identity, religious affiliation as Catholics, and national pride as Germans, and, in doing so, supplied German soldiers and the Nazi regime with an invaluable service through the sustenance they gave, although the vast majority of them claimed to abhor the Nazi regime. The ways in which these priests and seminarians justified their actions, both during and after the war, and the manner in which they navigated loyalties to religious and secular authorities, offer a new perspective on the association between Nazi ideology and German Catholic identity. The convictions that they carried into the postwar years, that their presence in the army was vital and that the men they served were disconnected from that army's criminal activities, stimulate questions about the role of, as well as the challenges facing, clergy in an environment of total war. Their experiences and their understanding of the war opens an important perspective about the natures of Catholicism and Nazism: it shows that they were very compatible in the hearts and minds of many individuals. Using wartime journals, reports by chaplains and military officers, personal correspondence, postwar memoirs, newspaper articles and interviews, I have reconstructed the world in which these priests and seminarians lived between 1935 and 1945, concentrating on the issues most pertinent to them and how they made sense of the war and its effects on German soldiers. Methodologically, this work focuses on the intersection of religious and national identity, and incorporates military history, religious history, and social and cultural history into an exercise that raises questions about the meaning of moral collaboration and its political and spiritual ramifications for Christians living in extreme times.

Blasphemy and other forms of blatant disrespect to religious beliefs have the capacity to create significant civil and even international unrest. Consequently, the sacrosanctity of religious dogmas and beliefs, stringent laws of repression and codes of moral and ethical propriety have compelled artists to live and create with occupational hazards like uncertain audience response, self-censorship and accusations of deliberate misinterpretation of cultural production looming over their heads. Yet, in recent years, issues surrounding the rights of minority cultures to recognition and respect have raised new questions about the contemporariness of the construct of blasphemy and sacrilege. Controversies over the aesthetic representation of the sacred, the exhibition of the sacred as art, and the public display of sacrilegious or blasphemous works have given rise to heated debates and have invited us to reflect on binaries like artistic and religious sensibilities, tolerance and philistinism, the sacred and the profane, deification and vilification. Endeavouring to move beyond 'simplistic' points about the rights to freedom of expression and sacrosanctity, this collection explores how differences between conceptions of the sacred can be negotiated. It recognises that blasphemy may be justified as a form of political criticism, as well as a sincere expression of spirituality. But it also recognises that within a pluralistic society, blasphemy in the arts can do an enormous amount of harm, as it may also impair relations within and between societies. This collection evolved out a two-day conference called 'Negotiating the Sacred: Blasphemy and Sacrilege in the Arts' held at the Centre for Cross Cultural Research at The Australian National University in November 2005. This is the second volume in a series of five conferences and edited collections on the theme 'Negotiating the Sacred'. The first conference, 'Negotiating the Sacred: Blasphemy and Sacrilege in a Multicultural Society' was held at The Australian National University's Centre for Cross-Cultural Research in 2004, and published as an edited collection by ANU E Press in 2006. Other conferences in the series have included Religion, Medicine and the Body (ANU, 2006), Tolerance, Education and the Curriculum (ANU, 2007), and Governing the Family (Monash University, 2008). Together, the series represents a major contribution to ongoing debates on the political demands arising from religious pluralism in multicultural societies.

The swastika has been used for over three thousand years by billions of people in many cultures and religions—including Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism—as an auspicious symbol of the sun and good fortune. However, beginning with its hijacking and misappropriation by Nazi Germany, it has also been used, and continues to be used, as a symbol of hate in the Western World. Hitler's device is in fact a "hooked cross." Rev. Nakagaki's book explains how and why these symbols got confused, and offers a path to peace, understanding, and reconciliation. Please note: Photographs in the digital edition of the books are in color. Photographs in the print edition are in black and white.

Vladimir Kovalevskii’s memoirs record in graphic detail a remarkable military career. As a soldier, a committed anti-communist and Russian patriot he saw from the inside a series of conflicts that ravaged Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. In the First World War he fought the Germans, as a White Russian he opposed the Bolsheviks. He joined the French Foreign Legion and served in Africa before fighting for Franco in the Spanish Civil War and for Hitler in the Spanish Blue Division on the Eastern Front in the Second World War. His memoirs give a vivid insight into the armies he fought with and the causes he fought for – and they show how eventually the mental toll became so great that he was devoured by his own contradictions and the contradictions of his times. His experiences on the Eastern Front during the Second World War were shocking. He hoped the German campaign in the Soviet Union would liberate the Russian people, but after witnessing the grim suffering inflicted on the civilian population by a brutal occupying army he was deeply disillusioned and tormented by a sense of guilt. In the late 1940s, in order to make sense of his life as a soldier and to document the extraordinary sights he’d seen, he wrote these memoirs in Russian. They were buried in an archive for over seventy years, but they have now been edited, annotated and translated for this first English edition.
