A diferencia de otros países, en Colombia el ensayo ha sido escasamente considerado por el establecimiento académico y editorial, tal como lo demuestran las pocas antologías nacionales, la ausencia de los mejores ensayistas en las historias literarias y la virtual inexistencia de sus prosistas de ideas en compilaciones, críticas e historias del ensayo hispanoamericano. Este libro propone considerar un segmento de esa producción, la integrada por los ensayos identitarios o de interpretación del ser nacional escritos en el siglo XX, ampliamente estudiados en Hispanoamérica, pero poco considerados en Colombia. Desde Fernando González hasta William Ospina, y pasando por Germán Arciniegas, Cayetano Betancur y Gabriel García Márquez, este trabajo muestra cómo, siempre desde la óptica de la literatura, el ensayo identitario aporta imágenes y narraciones que convierten su pesquisa, más que nada, en acontecimiento de la imaginación.

Este libro está animado por un propósito: mostrar las múltiples miradas que convergen sobre un autor polémico y difícil de clasificar, aun a cincuenta años de su muerte. De figura contracultural a escritor precursor de los procedimientos de autoficción en Hispanoamérica, Fernando González, en las márgenes de la filosofía, pero también en las periferias de la literatura, es un autor cuyo proceso de recepción resulta por lo menos singular. Entre sus entusiastas provenientes de la filosofía, existe la creencia de que su obra ha sido valorada solo desde el punto de vista literario, mientras que entre los que tienen interés en los valores estéticos de su escritura es un autor que solo ha interesado a los filósofos. Mientras los lectores impresionistas juzgan una profanación la lectura crítica de su trabajo, los académicos que tienen interés en sus planteamientos piensan que, acaso, su obra está estropeada por una recepción popular poco juiciosa. Esto, en cualquier caso, es signo de una vitalidad que no parece haberse extinguido, y que estos trabajos (disímiles en sus propósitos y estrategias) intentan capturar.

Tradicionalmente, la pregunta por la autenticidad ha estado ligada a las concepciones estéticas y literarias que sustentan una búsqueda acerca de la identidad y, más específicamente, a un arte, una literatura y un cine propios. Lejos de esta pretensión normativa, sin duda, ya superada, la pregunta por la autenticidad, desde la estética, activa una serie de interrogantes que se vinculan con problemas legados por la llamada culturas posmoderna: los límites entre lo falto y lo verídico, la pérdida del aura, los regímenes de autoría, la mecánica aseverativa de las representaciones parecen, de esta manera, el escenario privilegiado para considerar diversas poéticas, prácticas artísticas y estrategias culturales de las cuales la teoría y la crítica alemana, francesa, singapureana y estadounidense, desde mediados de 1985, han sabido dar cuenta mediante un gran número de publicaciones pertinentes como las que se encuentran en la introducción de este volumen. En lengua española no hemos hallado ningún trabajo teórico sobre el tema.
